RANT: Tractor Supply won't sell less than six chicks!!!

It is a nation wide policy, I have a friend who works at tsc. She was in charge of chicks this year. She knew what hatchery her chicks came from. But they didn't give them hardly any info. It's not the store it's corporate. Thy don't let folks into the containment area to protect chicks from rough handling and introduction of disease. I much prefer that to letting snot nose brats (and I don't mean kids there are some adults I classify as snot nose bratsand yes I like kids...) grab squeeze and hide them around the store! (in past years when the barricades werent around them they frequently found dead and dying chicks tucked in shelves etc all over cause someone thought it was funny. So I will. It grip of they don't let me or anyone touch the chicks.

I bought 21 bantam chicks this year from Tractor Supply all but two have died. I have incubated chicks and raised them for many years now, I have many healthy animals on my farm. This has caused pain to watch these bantams just drop dead for no reason. I will never again buy chicks from there and hope no one else will either.

I avoid TSC because the staff isn't all that educated when it comes to certain things I was getting the shoulder shrugs and the I don't know so I turned around and walked out drove 20 mi to my favorite local feed store and they helped like pros steered me in the right direction and even threw in a free chick with my purchase, I now make that drive for everything needed for my chickens! Gebo's told me I had to buy 6 chicks as well when I went in to buy a replacement RIR I shook my head and said thanks but no thanks! I try to avoid the big name feed stores at all costs.

I used to work for TSC and you cannot justifiably be upset with the employees, as most of them ar hired then thrown to the wolves. What I mean is management will expect you are already knowledgeable of all things pertaining to "life out here" and expect you to be able to make the sale. TSC teaches you how to care for CHICKS, that's why I am here - to learn about Raising Chickens. Granted, each store is different and some managers may take it upon themselves to go above and beyond to teach you more than is mandatory. I agree, it is inconvenient that the minimum is 6 chicks but that's retail, I guess. Some locations let you order chicks through them so that you know what you're getting. And there is a lot of miscommunication between the hatchery and the store. At the end of the day, most of us choose our "mom and pop" local feed stores over TSC for one reason or the other, be it price, variety or even distance.

Actually OUTSIDE of a tractor supply store in Brunswick, private individuals were selling poultry thru a poultry swap. When I tried to buy 1 duck (I have others), the farmer quoted tis STUPID Maine law about having to buy 6 ducks! I knew about the tractor supply requirement about 6 birds, and asked the farmer if selling his ducks in a Tractor Supply parking lot was why he was sticking to that retrarded Maine "law". He said it is a law, so apparently individual farmers adhere to this, not just stores! I fail to understand why the State of Mine needs to stick it's nose where it doesn't belong! Yes, there is a health reason why puppies & kittens should be 8 weeks or older to sell, but poultry do not have the same needs! You can buy a single duck when it is 8 weeks old...give me a friggin' break! I am gonna write a letter to the State asking why they deemed it necessary to pass such an unecessary and incredibly ridiculas law!

I didn't know it was a law, that is pretty odd. That might be why I can't find many hatcheries that will ship less than 6 chicks. I tought it was just a thing about shipping chicks, for warmth and what-not. :/
