Wow, who died and made you King? Would you like your "friend" to tell if you can or can't have chickens, how many chickens you can have, how to house your chickens, how to clean your chickens coop, when and what treats to feed your chickens? You are treating that man like he is a 2 yr old. I am betting the only reason he said he wanted to get rid of the chickens is so you would quit harping on him! I notice he didn't offer the chickens to YOU. Wanna bet there's a reason why. As for the chicken you "rescued", UMMM excuse me, in the eyes of the law, you stole it! Explain to the cops exactly why a chicken who is bound to get wet and dirty in the middle of winter, needed rescuing when it has food, water, shelter, a heat lamp and somebody checking on it daily. If that chicken so desperately needed rescuing, why did you not call animal control and save all the poor suffering chickens? Is it possible that at some point is you have tried to get him to give you that chicken and he refused? Let the poor man have his chickens in peace!

Uh, why can't this man own chickens? If the birds aren't abused or neglected, then they're his to deal with. Heck, he spent a lot of money and bought a coup, pen and other items. He's PAYING the landlord's daughter to take care of them.

If you don't like what he does, don't get involved. If he's breaking a law or actually committing animal cruelty, that would be different -- get the authorities involved.

Is it your place to trespass and steal a bird?

Believe it or not, people have the right to live their life the way they see fit, regardless of what you think.

If people took it seriously everytime someine got upset and frustrated and said "take the whole mess away" none of us would own anything! I just said that yesterday about my ca; at least once a week about all the critters around here. People too on occassion.

So give the bird back. If the landlord approaches you and says the birds can go, feel free to help. But when your friend comes back and decides to get more birds, just stay out of it. Don't get involved.

You need to report it to SPCA so they can come out take pictures and take the animals. If you clean up and help any animals without reporting it I agree that you are enabling this man. Some serious fines and restrictions on the number of chickens(or any pet) is usually what a judge will do. Some people do get tired of having the animals. If he wants to sell you can help find buyers.

There was a local case around here where a woman went onto someones property and took their dog citing it was neglected and abused. The woman was the one that got charged for theft despite any issues with the dog. If there are issues with your neighbors animals report it.If you want one of the chickens pay for it.

I have taken on animals and then changed my mind and found them homes. Sometimes it just does not work out.

To the OP. Do you feel like you have a stake in this game, because you have assisted him with a ride, or are you into everybody's business, this deep?

Was your long post to convince the rest of us what a lousy chicken raiser this man is, so that you could justify your actions?

Op stated "I have not gone to his house to check on them yet & even though it really is not my responsibility they are NOT out of site out of mind ( I am somewhat of a control freak & I just can't sleep not knowing if something goes wrong there like the 60 watt black heat lamp that is hanging w/ an extension cord has dust on it & starts a fire cause we are going down to freezing all this week

Maybe the problem is not so much his, as yours? You're being nosey and controling and now even worse, now you're trespassing and stealing.

Clearly the world is coming to an end, as I agree with Royd.

He is your neighbor Yes? He is 50 plus years old , Yes? He has a job , Yes?

Then why are you driving him around and why are you letting him yell at you? Is he your ward (responsibility)?

Some times the simplest solution is the hardest. Call the authorities and tell them the situation and then separate from him.

And take the hen back or we may be seeing you on Peoples Court.

I wish you wisdom,

The OP hasn't been back so hopefully she is still at least reading this. Sometimes the truth hurts, esp when you think you did something right.

WOW! Forgot to subscribe to this & just came on PC to hunt down my post.....I think I should clarify on A LOT of this.

First he is not only my neighbor...he is my friend almost like a brother to me & my DH. We are at every party/family function he has when his family comes to visit. They are not all in India, some come from Canada, some come from Australia & there are a lot of them in the states also. Being so close like family....we do argue like family.

From here on in to save confusion I am going to address him as Roger, The Landlord as James, & the next neighbor friend as Linda which I will introduce now....

We all met in our neighborhood years ago, me from walking my Doberman, Linda from walking her 2 Cocker Spaniels & Roger from pushing the wheelchair of the 23 yr old handicapped boy he cares for.

The area where we live is very much suburbia which used to be all chicken farms...most were demolished along w/ cedar woods being cut down, historic houses being demolished & farmers selling off their land to be able to pay NJ's high property taxes!

On that note, now stands McMansions all around us, all having between an acre & 4 acres. The majority of people who live in these homes are doctors, lawyers, judges & state police. So Roger works for a doctor it is his son that he cares for.

He was a live in that the doctor would have to drive him from his home at the shore that he rented w/ another man to the home here where he cared for Paul (what I will call the son of the doctor). So when we all started walking at the same time everyday we all became friends first as we didn't know we were neighbors & it takes an hour to walk around a BLOCK here as the properties are wide/large.

We continued doing this for years, then one day Linda who is a retired Parole Board worker & has lived here the longest & shared many stories w/ us about how the neighborhood changed & pointed out all the original houses to us. She said there has been a house vacant for 5 yrs now & the owner lives behind it & that it would be great if he could rent it & be that much closer to work for Paul.

He loved the idea but did not know how to go about asking since it was NOT listed as a rental or for sale......so Linda one day went up to the McMansion house & asked the landlord James if he would consider renting it to his neighbors employee Roger, meaning his neighbor is the doctor.

After some time he did say yes but there was no lease drawn just verbal about no pets, etc... so me & my DH rented the moving truck for him & helped him move into this 3 bdrm 1 bath Cape Cod style home which had problems but was livable & Roger just wanted to get away from his roommate at the time so would have taken anything.

Now I am going to explain the type of person Roger is.....again....HE DOES NOT DRIVE! No license! Not a citizen! Yes! He is ignorant to many things. He is a wonderful person to people & can easily be taken advantage of...just not on my watch!

When me, my dh & Linda was not in his life then he incurred major expenses taking a taxi everywhere, we don't have buses around here this is not a city. If the doctor, Linda, the taxi, or a relative didn't take him to the store he just didn’t go! We are not in walking distance to stores here.

So, back to the type of person Roger is...he lives paycheck to paycheck like most of us...he is very child like & innocent & in the numerous times he was robbed he just says "oh, well, they must of needed it more than I do"....sweet, huh? Yes he is the sweetest person I have ever met! But he is irresponsible & NEVER thinks of the future just lives in the moment...like a child...

I will NOT & can NOT turn him over to authorities!!! We all (his fam & ours) that he is our 57 yr old son!
big_smile.png
He will throw away not only the receipts of anything he buys but as soon as we out of store he throws the change (coins) in garbage! He is very wasteful & irresponsible w/ everything in his life!

He never lets anyone pay for lunch/dinner if we are out & will have a temper tantrum when anyone tries to to the point that money or credit cards are flying everywhere! I have learned to accept him the way he is but others need a Xanax to be around him or just avoid him altogether as your jaw drops & you just want to throw your hands in the air & say what the heck is wrong w/ him!!!??

I see I forgot a REAL IMPORTANT part of the original post.........He DID tell us to take all the chickens over 2 months ago! My DH said no way! we got our hands full now! Unlike most of you on here we DO NOT believe in chicken math! We take in only what we can handle & are not animal hoarders! If we feel we can't provide the best possible husbandry for an animal we don't have it!
And, while Roger says I take animals over people....well I always thought I considered them as equals BUT after reading what some of you have said I guess they are ranked higher in my book now! As they do not judge!

While you all seem to think I was judging him (Roger) I was just venting as I am not about to start taking a mind altering drug to be able to deal w/ him! Out of all his friends he is closest to me & tells me what he would never tell anyone else..not even his own family!

Like my DH said I should have never vented to an internet forum to be judged so as to make all yourselves feel better! Yes...I did ask for it but from now on I have learned not to put my business on the internet. Until you all are in my shoes, you will never understand what it is like to worry about him, his finances & NOW 17 chickens!

He has had the fire dept there 3x already this year since he never uses an oven & bakes but only fries food over fire which is his prerogative but he walks away from that high natural gas flame & forgets about it, so hard wired alarm goes off & fire dept shows up!

One day I went over there drop off some groceries for him & he had Paul outside in the rain in his wheel chair w/ a plastic dry cleaners bag over his head! The boy was red! I said Roger your suffocating him & he said back he is fine there is a hole on the top
tongue.png
He over buys food like tomatoes & cabbage then throws it away instead of composting or feeding the chickens & I am sorry but I am NOT an idiot & any chicken can eat cabbage &/or tomatoes as a treat it it does not affect their laying or health!

We all have Roger's belongings stored that he purchased & then changed his mind about having & would say if you do not take it I will throw it out! Well, would you let him throw out a perfectly functioning pc, tv, toaster, microwave, mp3 player, etc...the list goes on & on....just plain wasteful especially in this economy!

Does he want these things? NO Does he want them going to a homeless shelter or church? NO He just wants them gone..thrown in garbage when there is absolutely nothing wrong w/ them....he just changed his mind or they were to hard to work or understand!

Well people...that is what he is doing w/ these chickens!!!! He liked the idea of them & wanted to see them & hear a rooster when he looked out the window but he NEVER wanted the responsibility as he is the most irresponsible person I know...I say that as truth NOT judgement & even his OWN MOTHER says giving Roger money is like giving a flower to a monkey...he will just pull it apart petal by petal!

He only paid the girl money because I told him I would check on them but would NOT take any money for it that I would oversee the young girl & that I really did not want the responsibility as last year when he left we got 32 inches of snow in one night & we couldn't even get off our property let alone go around the block to his!

We bring in the mail, we set timers in the house for the lights so it don't look vacant & over all watch over this man & try to protect him as best we can. I know you would all be compelled to do the same if you had any heart at all for your friends/neighbors!

Last time he went away my DH had to make 15 phone calls to credit cards & utility companies to get them to waive the fees as he left for 2 months not setting up any payment plan w/ creditors! This mans credit is shot despite all the education we gave him on trying to save money & the importance of having a plan for his future. He is 57 & will NEVER own a home! Now that is sad : (

He is like the child who wants a pony/horse but only for the riding & fun stuff parts not the stall cleaning, grooming, teeth floating, shoeing, nights riding around in the trailer for colic! This people is irresponsible!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just like people who get animals then move change jobs & dump them & the responsibility on someone else! I am sorry, but that is NOT RIGHT! I seen this as being the end result of Roger & his chickens & back when he was out of control wanting them I said Roger what about when its raining, cold, snowing as he will not check on them for days if he has to get his head wet...plain & simple he won't walk out of the house, on those days I do my errands & foodshopping he never asks to come along but gives me a list of what to get him as he will NOT get his head wet! Again, not judging I accept tat of him it is just, well, HIM!

BUT, how can you have livestock as a responsibility when you won't even check on them if it is too cold or wet out???? Go ahead people, you tell me???!!! We went out of our way when he asked to make it so they can stay dry, put up a roof, walls, replacement greenhouse tarping....oh while we are on that wet chicken subject....we did not have heavy rain as the VA woman said on here when I rescued Lovey it was only sprinkling & this is a covered run w/ walls! Those chickens were not covered w/ mud! There was no mud that was ALL POOP!

My family lives in VA w/ chickens & only partially covered run filled w/ sand & they get flooding & none of her birds ever get covered in bad rain, feet yes, bodies NO! They clean their coop only 1 or 2x a year & it does not smell or look like that! If you feel those birds are fine in that ammonia filled poop coop w/ NO roosts just standing/sitting/sleeping on the piled high w/ poop top of nest box I invite you all to bring your birds there & let them breathe that in! I am sorry but I know they will all have respiratory problems....

So hopefully now you will understand how this man is that gets a bee in his bonnet & wants to have something then changes his mind when it no longer interests him! He is fickle & does not use common sense & has put himself in major debt to try to impress people w/ all his toys!

He has NEVER had a pet or animal in his life & we all feel he should never have any again! LESSON LEARNED!

And for that poster...I KNOW I DID SOMETHING RIGHT! & I hope none of you ever have to deal w/ what we all deal w/ this man....I am the only one that has not given up on him
tongue.png

And now I am off to take care of animals & not sit reading the things you are saying that you know nothing about...Thank God you are not in a court of law as a jury you would all hang an innocent!

Sorry but no they don't. Not when it comes to the care or lack there of , regarding animals. Or their children for that matter. This attitude is so wrong. Leaving chickens to live in their own feces is cruel. Not to mention unhealthy for humans too.
