Rasing coturnix on a large scale

i currently have about 1000 birds from day old to 6 weeks old not counting my breeders , Right now i am selling younger birds normally 1-3 weeks old and a 2x4 cage will house 40-50 at that age without problems larger birds are kept in a series of cages and loose in a 8x12 building i built .

i am thinking of free standing cage pens 5 foot wide 10 feet long 12 inches tall with a wire floor and wire on 3 sides those would be easy to build with the wire we have available locally could possibly build 2 pens tall with a dropping pan on top of the lower cage

^sounds really cool

Sounds cool as long as you can get to all of them. I would have to have three doors on each side to be able to reach them all in a 5'X10' pen. Please post pictures as you get this going. Just out of curiosity do you raise all colors or stick with one or two varieties? Are you selling them to local individuals or do you have feed stores or something that are buying up that many? That seems like a really high demand. Good for you!!

i sell at a local auction a flea market and a meat market in chicago .

i would split the 5x10 pens down the middle with light weight chicken wire and about 3 doors on each side or hinge the roof so it would lift up

i didnt mean just 2 pens , i was considering double decking them which i did not do , the first cage is complete and cost me about $90 not counting some recycled materials pics to come tomorrow as i finished it up at dark tonight

I am still waiting to see how you pull this off.

I was GIVEN 70+ A&M's for FREE and I am trying to reduce my flock. Quailer's (ya, not a real word) have already been proven on this forum (just read the threads on this forum) to not be normal

Yow.

I have a quadruple-decker free-standing cage that is ~ 3' wide, 12" deep and 10-12" high, dropping boards under the 3 higher cages. Each one easily holds 50 coturnix to about 3 weeks of age, and then they start looking like a stuffed phonebooth. Generally about the time I think I have too many, someone comes and takes away a bunch, so I haven't had to worry about what to do with more of them. My A&M breeders are in a 4x4' pen on shavings, and my jumbos are in a 3'x5'x2' wire cage (1/2" hardware cloth floor)... probably about 40 birds in there.
That bobwhite setup in the ad is sweet... I have something a little smaller, but similar, in a hoop-style for my chukars to grow out. 6'x8', and holds about 200 easy at 6 weeks.

well i have a skid loader so i will just move the cages and scoop it up every couple weeks 3-4 5x10 gages are going to be enough i believe to keep another 1200 or so at staggered ages
