Rattler!! New pics, nother snake pg 3

Glad to hear from another person from the good ole rust belt of southwestern Mich-scrub capital of the world ha ha.

Our local rattlers here are called the masuagua(sp) and they arent very poisonous and are usually located in very swampy areas.

You are a very brave soul to get that close! Are the rattles on their tails tell their age or what? Even though rattlesnakes can be dangerous they serve their purpose at least they keep the local rodent and rabbit population at bay.

Scary!! I was just watching the news and a little girl was bitten by a rattler up by Big Bear. They had a snake specialist on saying that it is Extremely expensive to get the anti-venom. Over $2,000 a vial and I think they said it could take more than a couple of vials to treat. I don't even know if that would be covered by my health insurance. I'll just be extra careful when camping.

Found another rattler today! This one was about 4.5 ft, very bright colors. But the pics are in my daughter's camera, so I will have to wait till I can get them downloaded.

Actually, rattlesnakes add a new rattle with each shed of the skin, and a well fed, fast growing snake can shed several times a year, so you really can't tell their age from the rattles.

And many experts are shying away from the antivenom as it is from horse serum, and often the reaction to the serum is worse than the bite.

OMGosh, that head looks huge. And to think I am being a baby about a chicken snake I can't seem to "catch". I have seen the damage those things can instill on someone. YUK!!

He's gorgeous!!!

If you're scared of getting bit, though, it IS a good thing he's big. The smaller the rattler, the more lethal the venom.
Baby rattlers are absolutely deadly. You never want to mess with them.

OK, I finally got the pics from my daughter. This one has very bright colors. I don't know what he was doing looking up that tree. Maybe thinking about a squirrel dinner.

Where we live it's rattlesnake city. We get at least a few every year around the house....my hubby does the deed. He has a jar full of rattles, I guess you could call it his 'collection'. He got bit as a kid, now he kills 'em whenever he sees one. Darn rattlesnake chaser...he even pulls the car over when he sees one.

I just walked to our old house to check on my chickens there (which I never do), in sandals (which I banned anyone around here from wearing other than around the house) with one of my dogs (who I usually leave in the yard and has been snake bitten before), and looked over to see a Diamondback a few feet away, right where she had been sniffing around. Thank God she didn't get hurt. She is snake-proofed and will break a leash to get away if she sees or hears one, but this one was coiled up pretty well and hiding behind a piece of wood. She must not have smelled it.

So in a blind panic we rushed home, got the husband and the .22 That's one more I don't have to worry about.
