Recommend a cat litter

I'm throwing in another vote for SwheatScoop. I am generally happy with the way it clumps (when the litter level is getting on the low side it can kind of spread out and stick to the bottom of the box a bit, but otherwise it clumps nicely IMO). And I absolutely adore the fact that I can safely flush it down my toilet. In fact, this litter and the fact that 3 cats=3 boxes that should be scooped at least once if not twice daily (although I will admit that sometimes we do go a day or three between scoopings

) is one of the reasons that a toilet in the basement was high on our list of pluses when looking for a house. The only time I have noticed a bad smell is if we have gone too long between scooping the boxes. Otherwise, the only real smell I've noticed is similar to bread dough.

I will also second the idea that you may need to add another box or two. Ideally, in a multicat household you should have one box for each cat plus one. In real life, it often doesn't work out that well. For a brief time, we had 3 cats in a 2 bedroom apartment with the only place to put a box in the bathroom, and not a very big one at that. It wasn't really possible for us to have more than one box in that situation, and we did have some litter box compliance issues with one of our cats. As soon as we moved to a larger house, we got two extra boxes and the three boxes have worked fairly well for us since we now have enough room to spread them out so that one cat can't guard all 3 boxes.

I only have 2 boxes for my 8 cats...
BUT.. what works for us is: Scooping daily, we have one BIG litter box..(think it costs like 40 bucks.. its huge compared to regular litter boxes..) and we also bought a $15 big tote and cut a hole in the side...(think i got that idea from the Impster..)
And that tote is a god send! its worked soo good and stopped my one cat from doing his random bed peeing...

So, i think the trick is BIGGER boxes maybe??

I agree with this. Fresh Step litters work very well with multiple cats. I also like the Arm & Hammer litter that is dual odor eliminator. But I only have two kittens. When I had more cats, Fresh Step worked the best.

My favorite is Tidy Cat. I like it and the cats like it.

They also loved the Nature's Miracle. Works really good, but it's expensive unless it's on sale. It seems to work best if scooped often, not so much if you let it go a few days. Tried the Sweet Scoop and the World's Best. They worked ok, but didn't do much for the smell (mine don't cover very well, if at all).

The pine litters are very good. I would use them, except my one cat is very picky and won't use it. There are a few of the clumping litters that same cat just doesn't like, so I have to find a litter that is fairly fine or at least soft on her feet. She also does fine with the Special Kitty Walmart brand. It seems to work pretty good too.

Costco brand all the way. Have three indoor cats; two of them are very big boys and it is the only brand that clumps with the amount of pee they can produce.

I will not go back to any other litter.

Really?? I never thought of using their Kirkland brand. It has to be cheaper than what we use.

Ditto.

I used to use JohnnyCat, until more cats moved in with us. Has little green chlorophyll bits in it to keep down odors. But A&H Multiple Cats Scoopable works better for this household. (AND it also works in a LitterMaid box.)

With three cats, I always had two litter boxes. One automatic and one "manual."

Now that I'm down to just one adult cat, who is very comfortable with the automatic litter box, the non-electric litter box has been re-purposed as a dry dust bathing box in the coop during rainy weather.

Thanks for the recommendations y'all.

I've considered a second box, but not really sure where we could put one in this small house. Bathroom isn't big enough for a second one unless I were to move the laundry hamper to another room. Plus, the boys are trained to stay out of the bathroom - no kitty crunchies for them - but they have full access to the rest of the house. They are both so well behaved that we don't even bother to crate them when we are gone anymore. We just put a puppy gate across the bathroom doorway in case they conveniently forget their training while we're out.

I like the sounds of the SwheatScoop, I'll have to check for that brand when we go to the city. I know the wally world here doesn't sell it. Guess I'll experiment with the different brands y'all mentioned. Thanks again.
