Yeah, my brother in law and his wife spent like crazy.
I don't think they teach kids about compound interest. I just got a credit card because they were giving away free money to get it. I don't intend using it now they've given my my free money, but I just got the first statement. On the bottom it gives you an estimate of what you'd pay if you made X payment. I put $1500 on it (deposit on my new washing machine/dryer).

If I were to just make the minimum repayment, it would take TWENTY years to pay it back and I'd get slugged $4000 odd dollars in interest. Surely, anyone who sees that written in black and white would want to pay it back ASAP and not keep buying stuff on credit. I'd never seen that when I used to have a credit card years ago. I think it's good to show people what they are getting into, and kids should be taught better how $100 on credit isn't the same price as $100 cash.

They still sell those manual mitre saws and mitre boxes new at the hardware shop. Sometimes original is best, but I can't imagine how much effort it would be to hand-saw all the timber for a project/construction. You'd get a very strong arm muscle, I expect.

Who remembers neighborhoods full of kids riding bikes and playing jacks? Hopscotch and jump rope, Sunday evenings watching Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom, late summer nights playing hide and seek. Camping in the back yard, throwing a frisbee, roller skates with 4 wheels.
Those were the days!

Now it's like a ghost town out there. Helicopter parents freak out if a couple kids walk to the park on their own. It's a shame.

It is sad that many kids can't get outdoor time and physical exercise because of those fears. It can't help the (so-called) "obesity epidemic" being cooped up inside and being driven everywhere.

We used to walk about a lot to go places. We'd walk to friends', I had to walk quite a distance from my school to the bus-stop when I was still in primary school, I'd get sent up to the deli to buy things. You'd probably find yourself locked up if you let a kid do that these days.

So true! I remember reading recently about a couple that had childrens services called on them because they let their kids walk to the park, play, and walk home

What was your first car Mace (anyone)?

Mine was a 1958 Mercury and seemed pretty old when I got it (the 70's). No power steering, no power brakes and drank a quart of oil every 2 days. There were some fine adventures cruising around in that old tank!
Mine was a '72 Plymouth Duster with no paint, no grill, a cracked windshield, and wipers that NEVER worked! I miss that car!

And you had to walk uphill. There AND back!

"Free range children" are mostly a thing of the past, sadly.
