I was reading a book that was published in 1946 but it was based off of the author's early life (so 1900s-1910s). Basically while reading I found an interesting tidbit and to quote "Turning she saw a red automobile. It was passing with almost meteor like swiftness, fifteen or twenty miles an hour." It's been a running joke in my family ever since :p.

And then there was the time a bunch of us kids obtained a giant appliance box in the middle of a snowy winter.

We tied together our small fleet of flexible flyers in a sort of a train and tied the box to the top of the array of sleds ... closed end up front. Piled in through the back with stolen pillows for 'safety'.

Now, the only decent hill led down through some trees and down to the river.

As we descended at great speed and sensed that we were nearing the trees (and thus the river!) through judging the terrain by looking out the BACK ... we began to rock the contraption to bring it to its side before speeding across the (mostly ... possibly ... somewhat) frozen river. Just as we were about to tip the whole affair over the whole thing crashed headlong into a tree. We emerged dazed but grateful our 'engineering' kept us from going into the icy drink.

It was the freakin' BEST DAY OF SLEDDING EVER!

When I was in my early teens a good friends brother was into the VW baja bugs.
He had a parts car that was a stripped down VW. No motor, no doors or fenders. Seats barely bolted in. No brakes. We would all pile in and ride down a huge hill to the farm. About a 1/2 mile ride and with no brakes we'd curve it into a tree at the bottom to stop it then use the tractor to pull it back up to the top to run it again. Man it was fun and when you hit that tree it would throw us all over inside. Sometimes someone would even pop out a door hole. On our last run we missed the trees and jumped the ditch landing on its side in the creek. Creek was only about 3' deep but idk how someone didn't get killed from either drowning or getting crushed.
A few of us did get our *sses beat for that one.

We also used one of the fiberglass vw hoods as a sled. You could fit quite a few kids on it and with the curved front it would fly through the snow without getting hung up. Same friends brother used to pull us behind the farm truck through the fields.
Come spring we tried it behind his 66 chevelle on grass and gravel. Wasn't long before the gravel roads ate the fiberglass up but that was fun and hella fast.

When I was a kid, Mom cooked almost every day and eating out was a rare treat. I grew up thinking she was the best cook ever (other than my grandma) which I know now, she wasn't really ;).

I understand that a lot of parents today work outside the home now but it seems kind of sad that the whole sitting around the kitchen table together is a thing of the past.

We sit down as a family to eat together at dinner. No TV or phones allowed at the table. Even guests know no phones are allowed.

Just heard the news that Jerry Lewis has died. Another "golden oldie" gone. :(

Hadn't heard that. I wonder if any young kids today have heard of him or maybe they just know him from the telethons (can't remember if he was still doing those or not). I used to get a kick out of the old Dean Martin/Jerry Lewis movies!

Remember going out bike riding?

Um, yeah...;)

Re: sledding, it didn't snow where I grew up, but every spring the hills behind our house would get covered with this real slippery wild ivy, and for some strange reason everyone's metal trash can lids would start disappearing...

I've been watching The Match Game on Game Show Network recently, anyone remember that one?

"Dumb Donald was so dumb......"
