Renovating the Little Monitor Roof Coop

DH has begun the demolition and renovation. The two nestboxes and the new window will all be under a continuous roof.

DH and I discussed timelines today. I pointed out that chick orders from hatcheries are out to September now and that farm stores are not only continually selling out but will soon stop carrying chicks at all.

I also brought up the possibility of getting pullets -- perhaps ones that people got in COVID panic and don't want -- locally, but that I can't attempt to source any if I don't have a place to put them.

I let him make the decision in re: which of three important projects to prioritize and came home to the above. He is a darling and a delight.

We also have to source and purchase the poultry netting, charger, etc. The complete kits from Premier are pricey, but I thought it might be worthwhile since we are not knowledgeable about electric fencing and chargers.

This is the go-to guy.

Might start a new thread and tag him, he's very patiently helpful.

That excellent article has been referred to me before and we are endeavoring to learn from it. Once we have our house in place and can begin the new coop and runs (we intend to subdivide the area), we will make heavy use of electric wire.

But for now, with the need to be able to move the fence and to minimize setup and takedown, the net style looks to be our best option.

DH used his new oscillating tool on the demo of the damaged areas. It was much handier and more precise than a reciprocating saw. Highly recommended.

He has decided to buy metal roofing and install it over the existing materials because, though they have failed the underlying structure has not deteriorated. This will save time and effort compared to removing the shingles and felt paper then replacing everything -- especially since the next week is going to be wet.

I reminded him that the next boxes needed to remain 12" high after the re-roofing (that part will be a complete replacement), and switch to front drop-down. Unfortunately, I'll have to bend down to look for eggs, but it will be better than I had.

We'll go with inexpensive, bare-metal grey since I wanted a light color against the sun and it works with the barn red paint.

Been working on the coop much of the afternoon and will finish major endeavors after dinner.

I've been taking photos as we go along.

The roost mount replaced. I still have to figure out how to lock the roost in place (I liked using a natural branch but the birds knocked it down periodically):

More is done but photos aren't downloaded yet.
