Restoring An Old Hen-house

Ha! I got some chicks on Thursday, and named one of them Esmerelda. I was wondering why that name popped into my head... so random. So, I pop in here and see this thread again, and I figured it out. I saw it here.

Well, she will never know she was named after a noxious weed. lol

LoL. I promise I'll get some pics of what I did last thursday up soon. Keep being late getting in from work.

OK, FINALLY; this is what I did last Thursday:
Got the back of the house cleaned out. This is where the most construction will be needed:

The local Livestock Deities were pleased with the sacrificial offerings ;)

"SOMEONE" piled a bunch of privit hedge bushes that had been ripped up under the shed part of the building to dry out and die last year. Will have to haul those out as well:

I decided to make two posts out of it, since it was so pic heavy:
Here, you can see a bit of Esmerelda showing the signs of my "tender" bedside manor:

And now some of the interior, including Esmy's lusher half:

I actually think that cows WILL eat the poison ivy and poison oak (we actually have BOTH in this region, arn't we lucky) at least they do SOMETHING to it, as there is VERY little growing in the pasture or timber stands that the cows have access to. But I would not feed them Esmerelda, there's just too much of her, and she's been pumped full of poisonous chemicals, lol.

Getting it cleaned out is going to be the hardest part, what are you doing for lumber? I prob would replace alot of the boards on that one side Prob will be easier that way, and say the scrap stuff you take off to use for touch up and repairs in other areas, can you still get that type of wood near you? What kind of floor is in it?

I am soo glad you are documenting this project. Both written and in photographs. Do you possilby have some old photographs of it when it was a chicken house before? That would be something very intriguing to see so you could show the full circle of closure.....

Hey just in case esmerelda gets you when your cutting her down you should pick up some Ivy-Dry.. It is the best anti itch i have ever used.
I had helped my mom clean out a place for a garden and got poison ivy on one leg and poison oak on the other.. aren't I lucky? We tried everything and nothing controlled the itch we talked to a family friend and she told us to pick this stuff up it is the best thing ever! it works great for bug bites to!

We bought ours at walmart you have to ask the pharmacist cause it is behind the counter ( it's got the good stuff in it so they can't have it out lol) but we have like 6 bottles at our house it works great for everything...

Have a great day and I can't wait to see your finished coop
