Restoring An Old Hen-house

So, I am at a standstill on the hen-house, kind of. Ran out of 1x8's while I actually had a friend available to help me hang them. Hopped in the truck and ran tot he building supply store. They are out of 1x8's, "Until the truck runs, maybe this afternoon, but might be tomorrow or Saturday. Possibly Monday...."

Um..... whaaaaaaaaa?!?!?! How do you run a business and not have any idea when your supplier will deliver? I mean any company is open to have random logistical problems, but I had a similar conversation with the own last week, and the week before, in which I cleaned him out of 1x8's both time, guess someone else beat me to him today.

So I went to the next town to the building supply there and asked about 1x8's and was told "We really don't stock 1x's, not that much call for them. We have some very nice spruce for house siding, but that's be a bit fancy and expensive for chickens (I agree, I love my birds but we DO have a little bit of sense in the south)."

Wait....... whaaaaaaaaaa? You don't ...stock......... 1x's? Period? But? But? But? I'm sooooooo confused now. What do you build...... ANYTHING with, without 1x's?

So in a fit of desperation I went to the "other" building supply store in the county. One owned and run by a rather unsavory gentleman who sits on the local Board of Education and somehow gets all the contracts for electrical, plumbing, and small scale construction work to be done in the schools..... He has a friend in the capitol so no amount of complaining to Montgomery will do any good. Been there tried that. Normally I refuse to business this store, but I was a bit desperate. I walked in, asked about 1x8's and was led out back tot he lumber yard, the owner (who knows me personally and funded the guy the that ran against my father in the last Superintendent's election) led me over to a stack of 1x8's showed 'em to me, and told me that he didn't have any for sale.....

So back home I went to pack up the nails and tools and plot the the now unnecessarily vicious and brutal removing of Esmerelda which I intend to start on tomorrow.

Well, as I said; unsavory fellow. I really should have known better than to even go there. But the OTHER two stores.... really? And people wonder why the county is declining and the young people are moving away like rats abandoning a sinking ship..,

That is neat, wouldn't have thought of wine. I know vinegar will do it, to it. I got 2 gallons of that to douse the roots with after I finish removing the trunk and branches. That is today's project since I don't get paid till midnight, so no lumber for me till tomorrow

Great job on the coop. I can't wait to see it all done. Careful with pulling the poison Ivy down from above. My DH and i pulled some off my lilac tree not really worried about the stuff streaming down on us. We became so covered in the stuff we had to go to the hospital to get shots to help calm our bodies down. the onl y good thing was we didn't get poison ivy for two years after.

SCORE!!! Dad was passing through town and saw a house that belongs to a couple he knows. they are remodeling. They had a HUGE pile of siding out by the road for the city to pick up (the city charges a fee to pick up "construction debre") So he stopped and asked if they'd let me have it to keep from paying the city. Got more than enough siding to finish that back wall now. Once that is done I can throw up a run and the rest can be done with the chickens present! It'll probably look a bit funky, but I ain't raising no picky birds ;) lol
