LoL. Well, highpointfarm ALREADY knows this from another thread, BUT....
I lied about working on the coop today. It wasn't my fault. I spent yesterday building temporary run where I could put my Nankin Bantams during the day while I'm there to supervise them. I never expected a problem since these guys are 6 weeks old this week and been together since I got them.
Well, I turned them loos and all holy heck broke out. I ended up not being able to leave them alone for having to break up miniature cock fights.
I don't know WHY the presence of grass made them decided that they had to re-establish the pecking order
, but whatever. I know that as they get older, and start getting hormonal, there will be squabbles
, and every once in awhile someone is going to decide the time is right for them to jump a notch or two on the pecking order
, but I lost count of how many fights I broke up today, and the ones I think are pullets were right in the middle of it too. I now have 4 birds in isolation because tail feather got broken close enough to bleed a bit. No ones skin is broken though and when I checked a few minutes ago there wasn't any sign of the blood, although those feathers may just be damaged beyond repair. And of course, the run is big enough that the little cluckers can actually RUN AWAY from me now . And in their agitated state they were NOT tame, at ALL. So I had to baby sit until it lot late enough, and dark enough, for them to bed down. Guess what; nap-time came, and everyone is friends again
. Apparently social standing means nothing when you're looking for a pillow and your arch nemesis of 5 minutes ago is already curled up in the "perfect" spot. Oh well, next Thursday I have to buckle down and get this crap finished.
