Roosters are not allowed here, so that rules that out. I received some other suggestions in another thread about it being a small partial molt, which I am leaning towards, seeing as it happened a little bit to one of my other girls in the fall. She isn't going broody, because the feathers on her neck that are missing, I doubt she could have reached by herself. I don't think we have rodents. I don't know if our Jack Russell would prevent that, but we have rodent proof feed containers and a regular exterminator that comes to do a checkup. When I looked I didn't see any lice or bugs, and because it is specific to one hen I am guessing that it is just a partial molt, and there is no redness or anything. Thanks for all your help!

Well the first two of the 40 eggs i put in the incubator hatched on day 22, they are both Easter Eggers, hoping to find some Lavender Orphingtens hatched in the morning, had to maintain the temp in the winter in a styrafoam incubator!!

Hey Yall,

I recently moved to Coventry and just bought 15 chicks from Mcmurray hatcheries website.I am new to the whole chicken thing. Our back yard already had a goat barn and pen and a chicken coop so we are starting with chickens and then in spring time getting goats and maybe a pig but well see... Seeing this is my first time i went with "cool" looking birds over straight egg production but they are all pretty good egg layers from what i read. i wanted a few of each breed so i would have a bunch of different kinds of chickens. I ended up going with Buff orpingtons, silver laced wyandotte, black australorp, new hamshire red, red star, black star, and barred rock and they are sending me a free rare exotic chick from a straight run so well have to see what that could be. I really wanted a golden lace wyandotte but i would have had to put my order on hold for another 3-4 months and i couldnt wait that long so if anyone knows where i could pick up a couple girls that would be cool.

Hey "neighbor"! Have you checked out MyPetChicken.com? That is were I purchase all my new birds from. Last summer I purchased a silver and gold wyandotte from them and they are beauties....if I must say....for our area you do have to purchase 6 for shipping purposes.
If your new to the area and find yourself needing a good chickie vet, the folks at Coventry Animal Hospital are good. They have an avian specialist on site. I just happened to fall on this tidbit of information one day. Saves some aggravation when in need and you don't know where to go. I like passing on valuable info.

How old are your chickies? I'm a bit protective of my flock when they are young. I didn't let them free range until they had actual feathers. I was afraid they would burn their skin in the hot summer sun otherwise.

They have not been shipped yet but expecting them soon. Aren't they hatched with feathers?
