Ribh's D'Coopage

The unis in Adelaide have kept their libraries open for students who need access. But every second computer is disconnected to ensure social distancing.
Wow! Our council libraries are shut. No idea if the Unis have kept theirs open. Our island has the highest borrowing rate of any library in the shire so there's a lot of unhappy readers here. :(

A friend of mine teaches primary school with lots of children whose parents were migrants. So the children speak their parents' first language at home, and my friend's work focusses on the children learning English. She's been doing zoom sessions with the few children whose families have one computer and it's kept in the living room. So she's doing reading lessons with the child with the whole family in the background in their jammies, respecting social distancing, staying comfy, listening to the lesson like it's tv So cute!

I think SA has a low infection rate and only 3 deaths so far. We know where the infection clusters are. So we can still do a few things, but like you our public libraries are closed. Just the uni libraries are open.

Oh. My. Gosh! 😮 I've taught English to a German speaking child. Hard enough in person. Can't imagine doing it via zoom. kudos to your friend.
Well, it's her field, you know. So she did a lot of postgrad learning and she's been doing it for years so she's probably quite good at it by now. And she'd have switched to something else if she didn't like it.

Don't know about school libraries, but I guess they're open.

Most uni libraries are accessible to alumni. So if you went to uni, you might be able to borrow from its online collection without leaving your home.
I actually have a really big home library, so not too badly off in that regard. Books have always been considered essential here. I've always said I would read in preference to eating & mostly that's true. :D It's the specialist academic ones that come via inter~library loan I miss being able to get my hands on just now but they will return.

Good morning folks :frow

Here in the US a lot of counties issue students laptops and tokens at the beginning of the school year and collect them when the year is over. I don't think ours does, but am not sure. In this area, there are whole generations that have never had a computer, because internet was expensive and hard to find. So they went from phones connected to the wall to smartphones and skipped the whole computer thing. It's taken four years to get fiber installed here and ooooh what a difference it makes. It used to take me a half hour to an hour to upload one of my reports at work, not it takes less than a minute.

On a sadder note, I'm going to ask for prayers and support for one of our BYC Mods. @sumi is a good friend and a major force behind BYC. She's battling Brain Cancer and could use all the prayers we can give. Here's the thread where we've been keeping track of her. It might be good to read the first post and then the last post made by @TwoCrows. Reading the whole thread would be quite the undertaking, but is still a good read. I'm worried about her and I do believe in the power of prayer.
