Ribh's D'Coopage

HAS ANYONE SEEN THIS BEFORE?
I finally decided Soda's nether regions needed more attention than a quick feather trim & managed to grab her. Like most chickens she doesn't like being held but I'm so glad I persevered. This, I think, was an infected quill gland. I soaked her for ages in a baking soda bath & pulled the scab free thinking it was blocking her vent. It wasn't but the water was disgusting & stank to high heaven. There is still some crusting below her vent but I see daily baths in her future until I can clear this up. She now has cream on what I suspect is a quite sore bottom & I am giving her antibiotics as well. 🙄 A vet visit is out of the question just now unless I find I can't deal with this on my own but hopefully I have got it under control. Not something I was ever expecting to have to deal with.

That must've been sore.

Not something I've dealt with. One possiblility is a blocked follicle that has become infected but I wouldn't trust that it is the problem. Good catch btw.

A blocked follicle was my bet given she lost a lot of feathers round her bottom & then got the runs. Plus I can see the new feather sheath in the hole.

That's kind of horrifying. Well done spotting and treating it. I guess it's the chicken equivalent of a pilonidal cyst. ☹️
Do you think it has finished draining?
Thank you for sharing. My girls are also moulting bottom feathers. I'm off to check them now.... 😱

Edit: The instructions for human pilonidal cysts says to keep it clean and dry after
draining Ribh. You may not want to keep bathing her once it has emptied.
