Maybe the vorwerks are set to enhance their 'problem child' status. I hope nit, but it does seem like an opportunity for them to become even more vorwerky. That is the right word to describe her, MJ.She was very sensible. The tribe seems to have had its upset before she passed & is its usual calm self this morning despite 2 losses in 2 days. I am not sure who is lead hen yet. Aoife seems to be the enforcer so I suspect Luna, with Ha'penny as support. They are the next 2 oldest hens. Beatha doesn't have enough clout but she also came with Aoife. The Vorwerks would like to lead but are too junior I think for the older girls to accept them.
Thanks, Bob. Both Hepzibah & Soda reached a good age & passed peacefully surrounded by their sisters. They were also quite a bit older than the rest of the tribe & starting to slow down, not so much in egg production as energy. Soda had been napping a good deal, as old people do, & I think was just too tired to fight any more. I won't be replacing any hens I lose just now so the tribe will seem rather depleted without my large girls. Luna is the last of my really big girls. Everyone else is medium to small. That alone will change the dynamics.I am very very sorry for your loss. I know how hard this can be. Lilly is my last connection to the real origins of my tribe. I know how devastated I am going to be when the time comes.
I wish that this burden had passed you by but that is not possible. We all face it eventually. What a wondrous group they all were. You were blessed to have each other.![]()

Oh dear no. I am so sorry she is gone. Everyone will miss her and particularly your tribe of nutters who likely know they benefit from her calming influence.Soda is gone too.
In all honesty I wasn't expecting to find her alive this morning.
A storm rolled through late afternoon. Most of the girls were on the patio. Not Soda. I thought she was in the shed as she has been napping there late afternoon but wherever she sheltered wasn't adequate as she was soaked through. I dried her off, but old lady that she was, she kept nodding off & when I carried her to roost I noticed that in just a few days she had lost all her condition & was as light as Olivia. Without Hepzibah I think she lost all will to live.
She was the last of my original 5.
This is my favourite photo of her. My 3 big girls were dustbathing together happily when along came Soda & plonked herself in the middle of them!At least she was comfy!

There's a word, vorwerky. And we all know what it means. Aurora was very vorwerky today. I like it. Aurora was very well behaved today by the way.Maybe the vorwerks are set to enhance their 'problem child' status. I hope nit, but it does seem like an opportunity for them to become even more vorwerky.
They were both over 5 right? Thanks, Bob. Both Hepzibah & Soda reached a good age & passed peacefully surrounded by their sisters.
