Ribh's D'Coopage

While weird and unusual is a compliment for many of us boring ordinary folks...i’ve yet to meet a boring chicken. Even the most unremarkable ones did one or two totally unexpected things at some point !
This is one of the most true statements ever made in this website. Well stated. :clap :clap :clap

I love the name Africa. 🥰

What made you get a Polish may I ask?
I wouldn't get a straight Polish because I have hawks & they don't see well with that top~knot but Africa is a Cochin X, & frizzled! 😁 So she has a lot of the characteristics I like while the drawbacks are minimised. She will have some sort of crest but it doesn't look like it will affect her vision.

The chicken I may have made a mistake with is India, the Aracauna/Silkie X. I'm not a fan of Silkies @ all but as she looks far more like an Aracauna than a Silkie. I was hoping for blue eggs & the gentle Aracauna disposition but she is the dominant hen in this little group & asserting herself quite aggressively. We will see. She is more settled this morning. China is quite simply gorgeous~ Lovely to look @ & a very sweet , gentle disposition. Apart from India all these girls should slot into my present tribe nicely. India will get a rude shock when she is moved out into the coop with the big girls. Portia will soon put her in her place! 🤣

Apart from Portia I now have small standards or bantams but until I have my own place that is probably best.

After an initial skirmish with Ha'penny when I first moved in, the dogs I'm minding have been very good with the chickens & rarely harass them. As my chickens are used to the cats they stick up for themselves so the dogs got a very nasty wake~up call & quickly realised they were not to be messed with.

So I can't explain their fascination with the chicks. They spend hours with their noses pressed up against the cage & their tails wagging frantically. Even pecked noses have not dissuaded them.

They seem like nice dogs. Do you like them?

Happy Caturday everyone.
Here is Nightshade in a trance suckling his blanket. He is what is known as a ‘wool suckler’ which apparently often happens when a kitten loses its mother before being properly weaned.
He latches on and suckles like a baby.
I find that very sad.
The vet told me to make sure he had access to fleece because the problem with sucking on wool is that little bits come off and can block the intestines - the fleece stays intact.
This is his favorite fleece because it is on my bed. He sometimes almost chokes himself getting the purr out loudly enough and that snaps him out of the trance for a minute!
