I'm not surprised that they get cranky. When Tsuki went through her moult in April this year she must have lost 1/4 of her feathers. The new ones pushing through the skin looked really painful, Like the worst case of acne for a human ....ouch

It’s such a shame that our pretty gals have to get so ugly ... so long as they get pretty again ... and less grumpy!

Deana, my hen who seemed to be egg bound a while ago, is still laying enormous eggs. Although they are no longer wrinkly they are often very thin shelled. I could actually see through the shell of one a couple of days ago, like holding paper up to the light.

So I have been giving her Greek yogurt to which I've added liquid calcium a couple of times a week and this morning she went to the nesting box afterwards.

I went to check on her and she was standing up and laid an egg as I watched! I've never seen an egg actually being laid before! So cool.

Sorry I didn't get a video. I was taken by surprise

I remember the first time I saw it happen. It was Daisy (greatest hen ever) and I was actually using the web cam at the time and I was quick enough to switch on the recording. I downloaded the video and then never saved it to anything else. I dropped that tablet a couple of years ago and lost the video.


It really is an amazing thing to see.

You are going into spring, right? How long has she been laying? If I remember right she is new to this egg business.

Wow! @Aussie-Chookmum that's amazing! I would love to see an egg laid but we don't have nest boxes that allow peeping in at just the right moment.

@WhoDatChick how is the molt coming along? When Mary lost her feathers, I read somewhere they don't like being touched while molting because it hurts. In Mary's case, I can't touch her at the best of times, so it didn't matter!

Well, Claire, Rosemary, & Sunny, look full on... Ruby, & Kelly look to be starting maybe.. I can’t really tell if Nilky (Silkie) is or not and Maryn still looks fabulous as of now.. those are my first gals from last year.. everyone else is too young just yet... but Rosemary and Claire look pretty bad and miserable ... poor Claire just stays off by herself mostly and doesn’t come around when I bring treats and stuff... my poor sweet Claire... thanks for asking
