Ribh's D'Coopage

Here, storms have a normal pattern they follow most of the time. They'll generally form over Texas and build at an angle up to the great lakes, pretty mush a straight line. Then that line will travel consistently East or East North East. This one appears stuck in the middle and the bottom is traveling east and north. These weird tracks tend to bring high winds and a lot of electricity. Tornadoes are very unlikely where I'm actually at.
Thank you for explaining. That makes sense. :)

These lines spawn lots of tornadoes though... the hot air colliding with the cool air coming through.. and straight line winds which is something more likely for us are just as bad as tornadoes!
Ok. That is how we see cyclones form, though here most of our really bad weather comes over the mountains. I am always really grateful we never have to deal with sleet & snow on top of everything else.

I was reading Shadrach's article on the *egg song*, which, from observation, he thinks is more an escort call for a rooster. The rooster escorts his hen to the nesting site of her choice & when she is done she calls him to escort her back to the flock. This makes perfect sense to me for prey birds who are free ranging.

I have an all hen flock who don't completely free range but I see a lot of escorting going on. I am wondering if in the absence of a rooster the dominant hen, or the flock @ large, takes on the role of a rooster escorting a laying hen to & from the nest. My BRs seem particularly prone to escorting each other to the nest & even staying for company, even though only 1 of them is laying.

What have you all observed in your flocks?

I read that one too! Very interesting. Janet and Mary escort each other, but not all the time which makes me think they might know when there's a hawk or fox around.
Yes ~ but I don't have predators. Well, we do have raptors of various sorts but they tend to ride the thermals over the water, not over the land, & most of them are scavengers, not hunters. Lazy Aussies!

I
I read that also.. and I think he is probably right!
Only a few of my gals make the egg song.. maybe because they are in an enclosed run.. so really no need
only have 1 who doesn't do the egg song & she's top hen... It is such a complicated social structure once you start looking!

Are you guys ok? Storm done & dusted?

Yes, we fared well! Thanks! I don’t think too bad in the rest of my area either... a few power lines down and some trees around.. but not near me.. That’s the second bad weather system that skated right by us so we missed out on all the bad... Praise God!
