Ribh's D'Coopage

I’ve noticed firmer whites and higher yolks in my Isbar and Sapphire girls eggs... I love them all and every way. Chickie hawks rescue GF’s are production reds and they are twice to three times the size of my girls, but more watery. Still having some shell issues with one Isbar though... and Mrs Marans, her sis, and my Barnvelders girls are just perfect for omlettes! Which is what I mostly do because Andrew likes them more, as we don’t have a toaster for dipping toast into soft yolks. Great! Now I’m hungry...

However much you think something should work, there is still immense satisfaction in finding that it does, in fact, actually work!

We have had rain & wind for about 4 days straight. The wind has been blowing hard enough to knock over the wheelbarrow, & stored timber leaning against a tree trunk & @ times push the rain almost horizontal, but the coop has remained bone dry & without drafts.

Heading out to check on them one last time before we lose the light because the torch is never quite the same. Hopefully they will all snuggle up together tonight.

Edited to add I spoke too soon. *sigh* The coop is sodden. Huge drafts. I snuggled everyone on the top rail for warmth & nailed up some temporary cover. Should hold ok until we can get the doors on. The wild flurry that did all the damage has eased so the girls should be fine until the morning.

No matter how well you plan, how constant the prevailing winds are, there’s always going to be the random day that it decides to come from completely the opposite direction just when you least expect it. And naturally that’s when you will also have rain blowing horizontally... glad everyone made it ok through the night. Don’t worry, once you get the doors up so you can close it off you won’t see wind from that direction again for the better part of a year, just because the weather loves to mock us!

You are so right! Just waiting for enough light & I will put dry cane mulch down for the girls & top up the feeder & they will be perfectly happy. Normally our rain comes straight down by the bucket load but yesterday it came in through all the eastern upstairs windows which very rarely get shut! *sigh*

Here's something strange. Sandy laid three eggs this week, the first was huge and the second was tiny. The third is between the two.

I've just carcked the huge and tiny eggs into a frypan for breakfast and discovered the tiny egg had no yolk! Top of the pan in the photo.
