So glad my feed store doesn’t sell chicks in tubs like the Tractor Supply does... I’ve seen those videos, and doubt I could resist either! The one store that does keep some for luring in impulse purchasers also has the WORST service, so I just avoid it completely anyway.

My favorite moment was after arguing with the insolent teenager running the till about weather or not they carried a product for 20 minutes, she then claimed they couldn’t sell it to us! We informed them that we were a Farm and yes they could... and she snidely asked if we were a “real” farm. When we pulled in we already had a full pallet of feed on the back of our truck. She didn’t grill the guy in front of us about his horse wormer or the feed they were loading into his corvette. Sheesh!

Right now my big struggle is that I borrowed an egg from the farm chickens I “liberated” to keep Chickie Hawk busy for breakfast... and there it was, A bullseye! He is doing his roosterly duty. I could set up the incubator and in 21 days have more little chicks! Husband is being good, said “no, not until the meat birds are off the heatplates, think of the electrical”... but soon, soon I could start a hatch!

I think that’s exactly why I don’t want a rooster.... do you know how many chickens I’d have!?!? ... I mean, buying them in the store is bad enough... BUT I can at least just NOT go to the stores.. so that helps a little... or only plan to go when you know you have to do more shopping elsewhere and you cannot drag tiny chicks with you everywhere you go ... see, I do have SOME self control

That’s why you get a little brooder plate, a plastic tote with shavings and a mesh lid, a small plug in inverter for your car, a bottle of water and jar of chick starter to take with you everywhere... then if you ever “need” to get chicks you’re all set, regardless of what other errands you need to run that day... just be sure if you’re on a long trip to book at a pet friendly motel... just incase!

You should see the set up I haul for taking my 3 cats to their vet... you do not want to be stuck in a car for 3 hours with a “potty” accident from kittie. We now have a travel litter box, food dishes, and they get to free range in the car on the ferry. One of my cats gets very car sick, and then sometimes has a whoopsie, so there’s plenty of extra towels. Having to bathe his bottom, wash out the towel and carrier at the ferry terminal with my little niece was an adventure... yep don’t mind us as we all pile into the accessible bathroom with our cat carrier and leash, nothing strange at all!

And really, truth be told I only live about 10 minutes from TSC and two feed stores... so IF I have to have them.. I could just go drop them home or go back when done.. so it’s really not all that helpful ... but I try..

Yep. Been there, done that. John still complains I was more worried about the kitten than him ~ he was the one the cat sicked up all over.

Yay for Chickie Hawk! Snotty teenagers on the till are the worst. Did you eventually get your product?

Our produce stores don't often have chickens & never very many @ a time. I like to look but as I invariably have the man with me he resists temptation on my behalf!

One of the few things snotty teenagers are good for “would your rather _____ or chop the firewood” is usually an effective motivational phrase! I do not really miss mowing... have you considered sheep or a small cow? They are effective and fertilize while they work... might not always work well with the neighbors though
