Morning Jeannie Only birds I've had that leave the feed in the trough and not toss it out have been meat birds. The heritage birds seem to think it's a sin to eat feed from the feeder.

Afternoon, Bob. Yep. Given a choice between the treadle feeder [where they can't toss the feed around] & a tub, they will always go for the tub & trash it. I am also finding a lot of *food dust* @ the bottom. They still seem to be able to pick out the bits they like & leave the other. It's a complete feed, girls! Eat it ALL!

Oh, and BTW... My butt has been kicked by my lower pasture. Took me 14 hours manually to do what I could do with the right machinery in an hour. I'm exhausted, sweaty and worst of all stinky. Got over 100F out today.

I know the feeling. On our block everything has to be done manually. I may live longer because of it but, oh, the pain.

How quickly do they learn how to open a treadle feeder?

Our winter's aren't generally quite this damp. And, yep, I think Lottie is totally awesome. She's so laid back. I go to shuffle her along the roost @ night & she just decides to roost on my fingers & promptly goes to sleep!

Pretty quickly. I got mine from Backyardchickencoops & there are a couple of screws that adjust the lid while the chickens are trained to use it. Now in an enclosed run I usually leave the screws in & the lid open. Before I kept it closed to keep the pigeons out.

I wasn't smart enough to know what to buy, when I got the farm and now I'm paying for it. Manually weed wacking then mowing a half acre is for the birds.

I think I'll get one for the run because it's not covered and the pigeons and sparrows treat it like a smorgasbord. They're consuming too much of the expensive chook feed.

Yep, that's very hard work. We had an acre and ended up getting a self-propelling mower. We used it every 6-8 weeks and it made a big difference to the quality of the paddock.
