Morning Jeannie :frow

I hope the weather improves and you feel better soon. :hugs

I have kitties too!! lol

This is Marigold, she was born at my friend's farm. She was about 6 weeks old and developed pneumonia. I caught her and took her to the vet, they didn't think she would make it, but here she is. My little fighter!

My other kitty is Taz, he too was born at a friend's farm. I was going through a really tough time and she showed up at my house and dropped him and a bag of kitten food off with Rich and said it was for me so I would keep smiling. Of course Rich didn't say no and kept it a surprise until I got home from work that day.

Such a nice story and pretty cats. :love Ok, true confessions... When I married Sue nearly 40 years ago, I was totally anti cat and she was totally a cat person (still is btw). So one day I take the dog into the vet for routine stuff and the vet is giving away kittens with free vet care for life. I took one home for Sue. He was a Tabby... He traveled too... Lived in Louisiana where he was born, then Japan, Florida, Saudi, and Virginia. He lived to be 18 and acted more like a dog than a cat. He was happy to take on any stray dog and win. He totally changed my viewpoint on cats.

lo, Bob! My John too! Totally a dog person ~ but as I'm the one who looks after all the animals we've always had cats & John has converted. I think because we have had mostly male cats & when he saw how they would go into attack mode to protect me & he perceived them as being very dog~like, he came around. YD trained one to *fetch*. I think all animals respond according to how they're treated. Everything responds to love.

Same thing with Rich, he had Labs his entire life, hunted with them and everything. He didn't hate cats, but didn't really see the point in them. Until we moved in together.

Marigold loved him as a kitten because he was home all day. Then she hit puberty and became a bit of a bi*ch. Once she was spayed she was better, but I have always been her person.

Once we got Taz he just fell in love with him. I told him the best kitties are Ginger boys. He believes me now. The girls dress him up in doll clothes and he'll wear a harness and walk on a leash. Taz is definitely more dog then cat.

I think my disdain for cats came from them being competition. There were too many strays and they ate the rabbits who during hard times were food for us. I remember the mill strikes during the 60's, the union provided one 3lb chicken for a family of three for a month. The rest of our protein came from things we could grow, hunt or fish.

I'm struggling for words but several thoughts are cropping up. First, I know your story is from a while ago, but I'm so grateful for Australia's social safety net and proud that my humble tax contributions support my compatriots in times of need. Second, I didn't realise unions had such a significant role in keeping people fed. I know that's not much food, but how many were the workers union providing for? These days, in Australia the unions get a lotof scapegoating but I reckon unions are awesome and I keep my membership going and I'm active in the professional society too. Lastly, fair call on both constructing a dislike of cats in those circumstances and on reconstructing the dislike later in life.

Ps feral cats are a huge problem here with untold native species wiped out or nearly wiped out.

@Aussie-Chookmum : this is sort of what I had in mind. It runs the length of the road with a variety of flowering, bird attracting natives.

So very, very true.

As for unions... both my parents worked union jobs for 30+ years so I am quite pro-union. They aren’t what they used to be anymore though... many large companies provide as good, if not better benefits for healthcare and the like now. Though I do appreciate how they protect and lobby for professionals, they often get a bit of a bad reputation here in Canada as well.
