Ribh's D'Coopage

Good evening folks :frow

Tis the start of a very busy and long day for me....

MJ if you like, try a tin of canned pink salmon (cheapest you can find) and give her/them a few spoon fulls per day. still treat it like a treat, but it's loaded with protein and vitamins. Another good choice grosses most folks out, but raw beef liver. Again loaded with all kinds of good stuff.

No, but when people give the same advice more than once, it's a sign the advice is reliable.

Hope your day goes as well as it can.
Haven't done a day like today in 15 years. Hope I'm still able to do it. My mind says I can, Hope the body agrees. ;)

Do you know what folks.. . I'm confident that the chooks are fed good food in generous quantities and I see tham eating it. Mary is big and robust. Janet is athletic and robust. Sandy is thin. Too thin I reckon. She's a hybrid layer of frequent big eggs. I think she puts her food into her eggs and not on her body. Any ideas about increasing her weight or is it a waste of effort?

My girls love the occasional serving of plain natural yogurt. It's supposed to be good for the gut too, just be prepared for flecks of yogurt to fly everywhere!

When they are moulting I also offer them a small bowl of chicken starter every other day, that I have left over from when they were chicks, as mash. Apparently they need more protein when they are growing new feathers

Let us know how Sandy goes with her weight gain diet @MaryJanet . I'd be interested to see what works for you.

What type of feed do you give them..? If just layer maybe switch to an all flock of 20% protein ... just a thought...

I agree with all the previous comments, a little of everything basically and up the protein and maybe the fats a little. Give nutrient packed “treats” like cooked egg and the tinned salmon, both great sources of selenium, omega 3 fatty acids, and such as @rjohns39 suggests .

The hybrid layers are the polar opposite of meat birds, and equally disturbing in their extreme body type. The layers here average 3-4 lbs, 5 at most. I’ve had them on 50/50 mix of standard layer and 19% with 5.5% fat broiler pellets, and whenever one gets sick they get chickstarter and egg omelette daily (smells awful! But it helps!) I take about 3 tbsp of 22% chickstarter and soak it until it has the consistency of a thick oatmeal then toss it in with an egg and fry until it’s semi solid, the egg is firming up but not 100% done through, it usually is fully cooked by the time it’s cooled.

I would try to help her put on a few ounces or a pound. If you have the time to give her the extra attention it can’t hurt, but I would never expect her to reach the same level of body condition you see in your other girls. Depending on her breeding she may be extremely thin for her entire life. These girls are bred to pump out giant eggs for just two years, on the least amount of food possible, all the better for the bottom line of the egg industry. That said, I’ve seen some robust hybrid layers, in beautiful condition. So I would certainly try to thicken her up a little.

I think Pepper was looking a little more sprightly today.

I will be dosing them with Amprolium 200 for the next 5-7 days just to be on the safe side as recommended by my "chicken guy" from the saddlery. :)
Let us know how it goes.
