There was a v scary photo shared on the Australia discussion

She's not an overly chatty girl usually, certainly not raucous, but she is quite aggressive @ times & that certainly seemed to be an aggression noise. And she was throwing her not inconsiderable weight around last night & pacing the roost, obviously agitated.

That noise reminded me of the sound effect for eagles. Are you quite sure they are all really chickens Ribh?

Perhaps all the smoke is agitating them. I know bushfires and smoke make me uneasy...

Deana laid an egg today. Her first since 25/10.
It is still huge but not wrinkled this time.
She was in and out of the nesting boxes yesterday so I broke out the lubricant. You should have seen the look on her face. "What was that all about!?"

Well, I guess it worked

I'm not sure of much when it comes to chickens. They were all beautifully behaved today though & went to roost peaceably.

In my experiences with my small mixed flocks, pairs of like hens work well. Also keeping even numbers of hens has aided in the pairing off while free ranging. From now on I will be adding matched pairs of hens.

Providing nature will cooperate of course. Like I'm in charge.

Certainly if Maleficent goes broody in the spring, all bets are off.

I agree, Mostly I have pairs @ least. My exceptions are the 2 girls I couldn't get matched up but Lottie & the Campines are a team & Lavender seems to get on well with the bigger girls.

I showed it to the man. He holidayed every year @ Harrington. Really dreadful what is happening to so many.

I agree on staying away from the ISA’s... they can be downright nasty and very dominant, especially in groups. Not to mention all the reproductive problems they develop.

I had 1/2 a dozen rescue ISAs 1st time round. They were so happy to be allowed to run round & dust bathe & be chickeny chickens we never had dominance issues & they laid until the day they died but their personality irritates me. Says the woman who is fond of Campines.
