Hepzibah is still in broody jail but it is overcast & a little cooler this morning. I heard the girls coming downstairs as soon as there was enough light to see by. Always amazes me how chooks really enjoy their life, eager to begin each new day & chatting away about how great it is to be out & about in it!

Their view this morning. I'll wait a bit to open up the run. They aren't happy. It's been so hot I've been opening up 1st thing but if I do that all the time I get brazen breakouts all day. The run is a privilege. When it's treated like that we have far less trouble. Besides, if I wait I know everyone will have eaten & drunk before they go to forage.

Such happy birdies! :) Green grass is a sight for sore eyes round here, where all the grass has been brown for months & months.
We suffer in the summer. The ground goes rock hard and cracks. The chickens can't forage where the sun shines. They do know all the best cool spots though.

We sit on clay & ironstone. It sets like cement in summer. The heat is a killer. I lost my 1st rescues during the summer. They just couldn't acclimatise but my present girls know how to keep cool. Their run has enormous holes where they have dug down to keep cool.
