Good morning folks I've had enough of work today, time for BYC

I'm so excited!!! I got permission to hatch chicks in Anna's 3rd grade classroom!!!

I know @Kris5902 @rjohns39 and others have lots of hatching experience, please give me pointers! I'm not sure what incubator I'll be using yet, my friend is letting me borrow one of hers. I have not personally hatched eggs from an incubator before. I always used broodies.

I'll bring the chicks home and raise them up from there. I'm thinking I might sell the pullets. @BY Bob if the time is right for you guys, you may have first choice.

If I have a brown laying rooster over green laying hens, what colors could they lay? One of the rooster is Barred, I wonder if I can sexlink the chicks? Anybody know how that works? I still learning the genetics of chickens.

CCCL just go for it. When you know what kind of bator, maybe I can help more. I incubate my chicks a little cooler than my ducks and turkeys, but start out at about 40% humidity. I'll have to fire up the bator to check my temp, but I think it's like 98.9* for chicks and 99.9* for the others. When I'm doing mixed hatching, I stick with the higher temp, but always get early chicks. This spring I may be trying to break into the school market... Lots of schools/pre-schools want to keep chickens and hatch eggs for a time. Think offering a whole package with rare and endangered breeds might be a seller. Who knows.

Here, the heat broke with constant rain overnight. At present it's 21.4 with 97% humidity and 23mm fallen since 9am yesterday.

Mary in particular suffered through the heat and she dropped a soft shelled egg from the roost last night. In future I'm going to insist she remains under the mist all day.

But today, there are five wet but happy chickens roaming about

Wow. More rain coming with that sort of humidity. We've had some quite good rain but suddenly we have black clouds of mozzies everywhere. As the man puts stuff in the water to stop the wrigglers it's not our water gardens. Probably water lying in the swampy bits along the foreshore but oh. my. goodness! They are bothering the chickens too. I'm waving coils around. Stinky but they do the trick.

When we lived in Virginia, the preschool I worked at did the chicken thing and the kids loved it. They took turn doing everything and got so excited when the eggs hatched.

Unfortunately yes. As much as I hate SharePoint, I have a talent for making it do much more than it was intended to do. So they seem to have a list of projects for me in the near future.

I'm so excited for you! What a great lesson for the kids as well! Maybe things will time out for me. Exciting!

I've been concerned about Hinge reasonably enough. Her general health seems very good since the hawk strike. Even her attitude seems largely unchanged. Given the wounds are under her wings, in her armpits basically, and that she was dragging both wings a bit for the first day, and that she won't fly up the magnolia tree to roost, I've been worried about wing tendon/muscle damage. Today is the first time I've seen her stretch her wings. She did both sides so the wings still spread. I'm hoping they are just sore and she doesn't want to strain them.

I'm trying to give them as much run time as possible this week as next week they will be confined to the coop. I've just had to bite the bullet before my mother feels totally unloved! I'll only be gone 3 or 4 days but they'll be stir crazy by the time I get back. I can't expect my man to chase chickens the way I do. I'm far more tolerant of their foibles...

You'll have to give him access to the meal worms for bribery and corruption purposes! Or maybe a tin of salmon or tuna!

This is a lovely photo. [The chickens are gorgeous too ] but so many of the elements make me happy: the sunshine & shadow on the steps, the dark green of the leaves, the window in the wall ~ & 2 very happy chickens.

And 4 happy babies on the steps!

With this photo and the last Shad, I really had to zoom in before I could see the chicks. Do you find that they are well camouflaged when they are free ranging?
