I have nothing against Polish. I think they're rather cute ~ but not with this flock! My man is very practical. He won't see why I don't want high production breeds. It won't be his heart getting broken so we will do this my way.

I say that and so far Phyllis has been a real joy. She is dodging Sansa quite well. Hattie did just surprise her by pecking through the wire as they stood there talking to each other.

The newbies want to come out into the yard badly. They stop and stare at the big girls whenever they come by. They do not run as the big ones come to the wire but rather stand there and talk to them.

So far, so good.

My problem is going to be Suyin. This lot are going in the small coop to start with & we will go from there, partly because I know the Campines will be awful to start with & a small space means closer proximity & more chance of them stopping freaking out sooner. I've not kept Araucanas before either so I am looking forward to learning about them.

Forgive my media overload... Yesterday’s trip up the mountain for firewood for Wayne. Note the “up the mountain”; that’s not fog, it’s basically a low cloud. The first two videos are going up, second two are coming back down. I think the third one shows off the trees the best (and has less reflection and mud spatters from the windshield) the road goest through the national park land. The only private property up there is DH’s family’s which is along the ridge of the cliff to the road along about 2/3 of our farm.

We got the truck stuck at one point on the family property, it was a miracle DH was able to get her back out. All for 20 small round of wood too
We are encouraging Wayne to cut lots, so we can brin next winter’s wood down for him as well... we will see how it goes.

No, not really. Their website isn't up to date but this is one reason I have such a mixed flock. I'm not keen on the really popular breeds [ISAs, RIR, NHs Production reds & blacks] for reasons that have been well & truly discussed on Bob's thread but which I could have all I wanted of. I'd have taken all Campines this time but I just can't get them but choosing birds with lower egg production means a few more hens...too sad making Araucanas should be a good fit with the flock I have & especially the Campines. I think they have Langshans, bantam & standard, which I may consider...I just really don't know & John has ideas of his own ~ which is why I prefer not to bring him. He'll want something I'll have good reasons to turn down & it will take ages to explain... but as I run the birds...

Are you dependent on the eggs? I'm lucky here that nobody really cares about the eggs. I've piled them up before and they either get given away (which is okay) or left to go off and tossed (which isn't okay really).

It is all turning out beautiful for you. I'm so glad. Everyone should have colored eggs! (Except me )

Are you dependent on the eggs? I'm lucky here that nobody really cares about the eggs. I've piled them up before and they either get given away (which is okay) or left to go off and tossed (which isn't okay really).

Yes...& no. When I have family here ~ especially any of the lads, we go through huge amounts of eggs. They'll easily do 1/2 a dozen each for breakfast. In between my neighbours do very well, thank you. I never waste eggs. Everyone around us loves getting fresh eggs.

@BY Bob you also need to be careful... sounds like there are enough near neighbors that are more than willing to set you up with some colored egg layers... and if it wasn’t for the pesky international border, some not so near ones too. Of course my next hatch is mostly spoken for, I think, and the girls are 50/50 brown/green so you’ll need to take at least four, maybe six?

For any new readers or people contemplating getting just a few chickens for eggs/as pets:
“And this, ladies and gentlemen, is how “chicken math” works...” And to think, I didn’t understand it at all setting out, now 56 chickens and 41 eggs going into the incubator later “oops”

My middle son, who is living here @ present, was shocked when I said I was getting more chickens but yesterday he & his mate were raiding the nesting boxes because I was out of eggs!! That has never, ever happened before! This is why I need more laying hens.
