Ribh's D'Coopage

I’m so over the whole selfish, self-absorbed, individualistic Westerner thing. It’s been bugging me for a while now, I’ve just been thinking I’m becoming a cranky old woman:old but lately it’s beginning to really get me down. Whether it’s appalling motorists who tail-gate and have the ‘must get in front’ mentality, people who breed chickens to be little egg factories and don’t care what happens to them after a certain age or those who panic-buy Ventolin because it apparently helps you breathe better if you get Coronavirus, I’m increasingly dismayed by people’s mind-boggling selfishness.

And then I see behaviour that (somewhat) restores my faith in humanity. Today my husband was doing a long bike-ride on a quiet country road when he got hit by a car. It could have been a lot worse, he ended up with cuts and bruises and no breaks but it was a hit-and-run. There was a witness, who stopped and checked he was ok and the lady behind him stopped as well (she called me). The 1st Responders were Rural Fire Service who checked him out thoroughly. He was taken to the nearest hospital where the staff were great, and a couple of hours later the police had been given the name and address of a suspect. There is a strong probability that the driver was drunk and will probably get off with a slap on the wrist, but everyone else today was amazing. My husband said he hoped the guy was drunk because if he wasn’t, it means he deliberately hit him.

So I know that there are good people around, sometimes it just feels really hard to see them.
I am so glad that he is ok. That is truly frightening. It's strange to hope for a drunk driver but I understand. :hugs

Ribh.. I’ve solved the broody problem.. all you have to do is have a backup plan.. having Cutie broody with no end in site.. I decided to go ahead and let her be broody and then get her some chicks to raise in a few weeks... well, no sooner do I say this does she decide to no longer be broody! :gig... problem solved!

Having said all that... I think Tunie may be broody... again :barnie........ sooooooo, I just may let her be the mama then... let’s see if it works again :fl

That second shot is amazing! That looks like some bath!
Oh, it is! :D Every afternoon she digs this massive hole in that particular corner. It is the last sunny patch in the coop & she absolutely wallows throwing sand everywhere. Sadly she's rarely allowed to enjoy it in peace. One of the Big girls will always come along & peck @ her till she gets up & moves. Sometimes she just endures the pecking then continues on as before but I've never seen a chicken who loves her bathing more!

Sometimes I wish I could live on a hill with just chickens. Although said hill would have a huge ceiling on it to keep out those goshawks! :wee (That’s me, chasing the goshawks away).
It's why I live on an island with chickens. :gig My neighbours think we're odd because we don't party with them but in all honesty, my chickens & cats are better company! :p

Hear hear

Hoarding is antisocial. People who really need stuff, sick, elderly etc can't get any! Makes my blood boil. I've been giving dirty looks to youngish, helathy people who take more than their share. I figure if they're honest, they'll say something like, "it's ok I'm a carer" or whatever. That hasn't happened yet.
I do have one aquaintance whose family numbers 18 all up & she has been getting plenty of dirty looks just doing her regular shop!

That is so scary. There are still lots of good people out there but they don't create the sensational news. Glad your man is ok.

Thanks Bob, it could have been a lot worse. I have banned him from riding solo and authorised the purchase of a decent camera.

I know some schools are trying to foster a sense of community; maybe in a generation’s time some of the selfishness may have abated.
Sadly I think selfishness is deeply ingrained in the human psyche. It takes real work to retrain that tendency.

So sorry! What a relief he wasn't too badly hurt. Isn't there a road rule about giving cyclists a metre and passing them at 40km/hr? Maybe that's just in SA.
