It just flowers in the spring. It's got rigid branches with thorns. There is no getting a chicken out of there easily if it doesn't want to come out. They have a whole network of paths in there.Oh that is wonderful! Is it a fruiting variety?

Pepper will roost on a branch/cane in the middle of the Chinese Lantern. The other girls don't.I could do with some shrub advice for the chickens. I want to plant some shrubbery just outside the Palace gates so that when I let them out to wander around they are not right out in an open field. As an added benefit some shrubs in that area would help mask some big manholes for the septic system.
I too love the cave-like shrubs we see at your place and would also like some with low but sturdy branches they can jump up on if they choose.
Looking for ideas and inspiration of what to plant in spring. Of course I would prefer NE US natives so I may be asking in the wrong place!
Thanks for posting the link @featherhead007 - he is a good looking guy. As I am learning breeds, what type is he?He's a lovely boy Alex

Look carefully for a black shadow in the middle of the branches above the other chickens. That's Pepper. No-one bothers her there!

I think if you look for a local plant that has a "fountain" like habit or a weeping habit you will get a plant cave eventually.
Here are a couple of New Jersey Native plant sites I found if they help.
