Ribh's D'Coopage

I've had to deliberately reteach myself to speak on the phone. So weird...

I looove that you're looking into some new hens! Fingers and toes are crossed that you find exactly what you're looking for and exactly what the others need.
Thanks, MJ. The man is anxious to get more birds while I want to wait & make sure I've got the right fit for here even if I have to wait a while.

I understand his rush, but I agree with you.

I had a look at those chickens at the link and she's bred some cuties!

Yes, I'm hoping that means I can get pairs. The man says if I stick with bantams I can fit more birds in but while that is tempting it is not the way to raise chickens.:idunno

The boys love to be loved on. You may tell Anna the boys appreciate her no end! ;)

Marlow looks like a long hair version of Scooby!

Not the best picture but Scooby is snuggled up with me and Rex.

That's an efficient fire then! :D The man gets ours blazing then goes to bed & leaves me cooking. 🙄 I head off when it dies down. 🤣
It's a good stove. Considering the door is open all day the stove brings the temp back up reasonably quickly. The heavy weight insulation is what cuts the wood use down though.
It's 8C outside now and 24C in the main part of the house. The bedroom is a couple of degrees cooler mainly because there is a window open.

You have the right idea. You want to have a compatible flock.
I do. Perhaps more to the point, I know what I don't want. They are breeds that are all easily obtainable but they all have 1 of 2 issues: a tendency to bullying or reproductive issues & early deaths. I want my odds a bit longer than that. :D

I am learning yet, but I did intentionally select birds that I understood to be more easy going in a group, not aggressive, and more likely to be people friendly.
And they are!
But I have two ISA Browns (who are so adorable), and a Leghorn (who makes me laugh all the time, she’s a nutball), and I have since learned that these birds are prone to problems such as you mentioned and a shorter lifespan.
But I’m okay with it, because I really love these birds, and for as long as they are with me, I am going to enjoy them and spoil them.
And not to be morose, but I no longer have such a long lifespan myself at this stage of the game, lol. 🤣

They arrived as mature kittens [about 5 months old] & unfortunately Marlow had bonded with his foster carer. She & he were both upset @ being parted. Marlow was quite traumatised. Being part Ragdoll they were quite slow to mature & Marlow about drove my whole house crazy. Any time I disappeared from his line of vision he collapsed on the floor & cried. I always had kids screaming for me as they carried this nutty cat to me. He is not much better even now but @ least he comes looking for me himself. Kirby is more self sufficient.
Oh my goodness...that is hilarious...poor kitty!
