Ribh's D'Coopage

I think flock size is a factor. So long as my girls react according to type it will be insane but calm. *sigh* We never seem to do things according to how everyone else says these things will happen so here I am out on a limb again hoping I don't saw my own branch off.

CHOOK of the WEEK:
Aoife.
Aoife is a Silver Campine. These girls look a lot like the Egyptian Fayoumis that they are supposedly related too. The head & neck is supposed to be pure white with no black markings, the body the stippled B&W. They have a wonderful upright stance & tail & are striking looking girls.

The silver were the birds I always wanted but my 1st foray into Campines was the Goldens because according to the breeder getting that clear definition between head & body is super hard to do. When I finally got my hands on some silvers they were all *muddy*. Aoife has the best markings.

These girls are quite a lot smaller than my golden girl. Ha'penny. Whether that is a breeding thing or just how they are I'm not sure. The eggs are smaller as well & while white are not quite as startling a white as Ha'penny's.

Campines are both rare & endangered. They are considered super flighty & not very friendly but that is not true in my experience. Yep, they can be flighty but this makes them great free rangers & foragers. They are very smart chickens & very aware of their surroundings. Like any other chicken they bond with their keeper & will accept hand treats & some petting once they know & trust you.

This is a breed I really wish was more popular. They have many traits to recommend them. They are reliable layers. Their eggs are a good size. They are are quite independant & while not known for going broody a number of mine have, though Aoife, like her sister, Ha'penny is sneaky about it, accumulating a good number of eggs before disappearing to sit. They aren't domineering birds but it can take time to settle them into a mixed flock as their antics tend to upset the more staid members.

Well, I've sort of forced the issue too so I feel really responsible for what's happening. I am pretty confident in Wrold. I know she is a determined sitter. I think Ceres will be alright too. Even her 1st time she was smart about things & she's not upsetting the tribes like Wrold & Alpia did last year.

Luckily these 2 are getting up themselves. Wrold goes super late in the day but she is doing it. The bales won't work for Luna. She's never used them. The hens who like them aren't a problem. 🙄 It could be worse. I could have everyone wanting these nest boxes & that wouldn't work @ all. As it is it's only a couple of hens really & if they have an egg to sit on they seem perfectly happy.
Put ceramic eggs in every box then. That should make them happy.

I've done that. At least 2 eggs are missing completely. :( I don't know where they are. :idunno I'll have to get some more.
