I wasn't taught to wear a helmet either. I only wore helmets during the county fair and at specific horse shows that required them for contesting because it's "dangerous".
I know a lot of people won't let their kids on their horses without a helmet, but I would rather not wear one..

I did fall off once when I was a Freshman in high school. I was riding bareback with no halter/bridle (stupid, I know). My horse was going up to the barn and he took a turn pretty sharp and ran my leg into the corner of the fence, knocking me off, and I hit the back of my head on a 2x4 used to make something (can't remember what it was). I was unconscious for a few minutes until I got up and walked into the barn where my friend and sister were and they didn't know I had just fallen. Then I walked past my sister and she freaked out yelling and stuff about how there was "so much blood" and ran to get my grandma. I had no idea that I was even bleeding, but I ended up having to get eight staples in the back of my head. I've got a nice scar though.

I don't own horses but when I was younger family vacations would include riding horse on trails with the guide and they don't even have helmets to offer you even if you wanted one. But I didn't know people wore helmets cause all Ive seen were movies and "cowboys" who didn't ride with them.

I was an extreamly confident rider before my fall. Now I have to take about ten minuets to calm myself down before I can ride. One bad fall and it ruined me.

I don't really consider riding bareback and tackless very stupid... when it's a really well trained horse. I used to ride my mustang like that and he's only green broke.

When I grew up, we rode in the back of pickup trucks and on the top of haywagons. Now we know better and wouldn't consider doing it. Children wear helmets to ride BICYCLES and not HORSES? That's pretty dumb, in my opinion. No matter how 'dead broke' your horse is, it has a mind of it's own. I rode horses without helmets in my youth, I would never consider doing it now.

A friend of mine was on a trailride with her niece. Nice calm, easygoing trailride. They crossed a paved road. No traffic, no rain, no nothing. For some unknown reason, the horse stumbled hard, she came off, hit her head and DIED on impact.

Another friend of mine came off, hit her head and went into severe convulsions ... she doesn't remember any of it. Was in a coma for most of the day, but fortunately has healed with no ill effects.

No, it won't prevent all injuries, just some of the most severe, potentially life-threatening ones.
