RIR girls????

So then every thinks since the RIR has 2 red breeds, every production red is a rir?

Basically this is where I am getting lost.....If the 'production red' is not an out cross from the original rir, but Rirs selectively bred for the egg laying trait....how on earth can they not be RIRs? Why is the SQ RIR considered a rir and the egg laying RIR not a RIR? Is this just convention? My logic centers are having a problem lol.

Are chicken breeds color breeds (if if looks like the breed, it is the breed)? I am sort of thinking no, but have read a few things on other breed threads that state that if the color is not right, then the chicken in question is not the breed (Ameraucanas for example...maybe rhodebars)

Thanks for all the info!

Their more notice as rirs is what im getting out of this.....

I am sure there is a lot of confusion from the way hatcheries label their birds. They all have 'Ameraucanas" too, which they dont lol. They all have Easter Eggers.

I just googled Production Red chicken for the first time, because I had not heard the term before my girls were labeled as such. When getting chickens I googled RIRs and found lots of RIRs...I bought from a breeder rather than a hatchery, but not a breeder of heritage RIRs.

Even using the term Production Red, the websites are describing them differently. Some mention the cross with the New Hamp red and some do state they the PRs are the production strain of the original RIR. This chicken thing is way more ambiguous than dog breeding!! Lots to learn.
