Roaming Dogs coming in and killing yesterday

Wow! You are very lucky you weren’t all seriously injured. And yes, that is definitely a responsible owner that knew the dog was in the wrong type of area and took action. We all love our dogs but need to be cognizant that they are animals and have killer instincts.

Our neighbor at our previous house has a little Maltese dog that gets out of their yard constantly and kills rabbits...like it is seriously a vicious rabbit killer. She thinks it funny and eggs him on to kill every rabbit and baby bunny he can. And she doesn’t even garden so it’s not like the rabbits are destroying anything. She just likes him to kill rabbits.
Only way he could have been more responsible was to keep his screen door locked in the first place ;) But yes, he took responsibility and made it as right as he could. Once something has happened that's about all you can hope for.

Wow, what a sadistic jerk. I'd feel awful if my dog killed even one bunny. I can't imagine egging it on to kill as many as possible.

The sheep owner shot the dog on the spot back at the dog's house? Geez. I mean, I get it, but if it was home again and nothing bad happened to any of the sheep (no spontaneous abortions or deaths) I'd at least give the owner a chance to keep the dog at home.

I think it was too soon to determine if there were any negative consequences. The sheep owner grabbed his gun and followed the dog home. He didn't take time to check his sheep first, so certainly there could have been deaths and/or spontaneous abortions and maybe they settled up later at $200 or $300 a head, I don't know. I rather felt, watching this, that if the dog owner had protested, that this could have gotten even uglier if you know what I mean. But I do know the sheep owner was within his legal rights. It wasn't the first time the dog had gotten out but it was certainly the last.

My husband and I were riding our horses in Norco. Just as we came even with a house across the street, the screen door slammed open and a young pitbull came charging across the street at us. It attacked both of our horses who were tripping around on concrete. Luckily neither bolted, reared or kicked but their good manners made them almost helpless. The owner was trying to catch the dog from under our horses. It seemed to take forever. After he caught the dog and put it away he came back to see about our horses. I yelled at him off and on for an hour i think. He offered to pay our vet bill and did to the penny. My husband's gelding was bitten on the leg and the penis sheath. Fortunately both wounds healed perfectly. He also sent the dog to live somewhere besides an equestrian community the very next day. If only every dog owner was that responsible!

I got in a similar situation, also in NM. On a dirt road bound on both sides with barbed wire, no less. The dog was biting my Arab mare under the tail, on her udder, neck, legs, and at one point latched on to my boot as my poor horse was spinning around trying to dislodge it. It was an English Bulldog. I brought law enforcement back later and the owner had to pay a $300 fine and vet bills! My very good horse took excellent care of me as I tried to beat the thing off of us with my English riding crop. The dog disappeared, I don't know what happened to it. I am strongly in favor of the belief that good fences make good neighbors.

Ah, I see. Well, if it wasn’t the first time then so be it. I’m surprised the dogs owner was so chill about it though. If it was my dog I would have begged for it’s life, paid any damages plus some for all the trouble, and kept my dog indoors from then on.

We just recently had a situation in our neighborhood. On a Friday evening, Neighbor A texted me and a few others asking if we knew anyone who was missing a couple of dogs. There were two of them in her yard. They killed 3 of her chickens before the rest got through the fence to the goat pasture. The dogs then ran the fence, trying to get the chickens and goats. She said that one of the dogs was super skinny. Apparently the dogs left that evening. On Saturday I texted her and asked if they had gotten the dog problem solved. She told me that they were currently locked in a shed while her husband was checking with neighbors to see if any of them were missing the dogs. One neighbor said that they'd seen the dogs chasing deer in their grove that day. No one claimed the dogs, so Neighbor A took the dogs out and shot them. The day after he disposed of the dogs, Neighbor B had a post on Facebook looking for their dogs. You guessed it. They matched the description of the chicken-killing, deer-chasing dogs.

Trying to be a good neighbor, Neighbor A called the dogs' owners and explained what happened. Of course the dogs' owners posted on FB what happened. Oh, the outrage! One comment was, "They can't just shoot dogs on their property! Call the police and get a lawyer and sue them!" Someone else pointed out the law that says you can kill stray dogs on your property that are killing, harming or worrying your livestock, including chickens.

Neighbor B lives 4 1/2 miles from Neighbor A. The dogs didn't have collars or tags. They killed chickens, were harassing goats and chased deer. (I also know that one of the dogs was witnessed taking down a deer by the throat this past winter.) I think Neighbor A did the right thing and did the community a favor. These dogs would have been back. I don't know that I would have been as kind as Neighbor A and told them, though. Maybe I'm a coward, but I don't think SSS is all bad. The kids of both families ride the school bus together. It wasn't good for a while.

It is just amazing to me that dog owners will let their dogs run loose and wild, be destructive and kill other people's valuable and beloved animals, and then whine and cry and complain when said dogs get shot. I love my dogs too, that is why I keep them home (only have one at the moment). Be responsible, people! Accept the consequences of your choices and actions. It is very sad and unfortunate that the dog has to pay the price for the owner's lack of responsibility! Grr!

So, one of my biggest fears came true yesterday. Two dogs that almost looked coyote like but had collars on came through and attacked my two guineas. Luckily it was raining so none of my chickens were out free ranging or I’m sure it would have been a slaughter. The guineas were out because they hate being contained and roam the area looking for ticks.

The dogs killed one and badly injured the other. He must have been able to escape to a tree. But he was badly mauled. So far he is okay...I tried my best to treat his wounds and he’s in a quiet place in the house.

So I belong to this “Nextdoor” app that lets you post and converse with all people on it within a 4 mile or so radius of your home. I posted a description of the dogs and asked if anyone might have seen them or know the owner. I said that I will shoot them if they come back on my property looking to kill more of my animals.

OMG....you would have thought I threatened to kill someone’s child. Everybody was up in arms saying I was hateful, that it was a misdemeanor to kill someone’s beloved pets. I had one lady go so far as to tell me that I was a bad “mom” and shouldn’t be allowed to have animals.

Trying to explain that I had every right to protect my property and my animals completely fell on deaf ears. And I do have every right. Kansas State Law states:
47-646. Killing dog lawful, when.
It shall be lawful for any person at any time to kill any dog which may be found injuring or attempting to injure any livestock as defined in K.S.A. 47-1001, and amendments thereto.

These people obviously have never lived on a farm or ranch. And of course, I don’t want to shoot dogs but if they come back to kill again, they are officially a predator just like a coyote.

Am I wrong here? Their attitudes just make my blood boil.
No, I don’t think you are wrong at all. If the owner cared about their dogs, they would not let them roam like that. I think you would be very justified in protecting your property and your animals when others do not.
