This is the story of my Barred rock rooster, Rocky. We first got Rocky in 2023 of October, he was a very VERY small chicken, We had 2 ducks (margarito and patitas) before my Uncle just completely purchased 3 barred rock roosters and Brahma hen for some special deal he got (3 chickens get one brahma free) at the market. now the barred rock chickens were incredibly hard to identify, The only difference was their size, So we called the 3 Rock chickens Small, Medium, And Large He was the largest one out of the 3, and we decided to name them just sizes until we can find a way to disfigured the 3 we named the Brahma Butterscotch. However, Rocky when he had first arrived was I guess 10 weeks? It was a wild guess. It was supposed to be 3 hens and the brahma was supposed to be the rooster But regardless we welcomed Rocky with open arms.. Until a tragedy had happened..

[ The fox attack ]
While all my birds were inside the pen, a pesky fox had gotten in and killed Rocky's two sisters, small and medium, our dogs got out and completely murdered the fox before it cause anymore damage, but it was already too late. While Rocky was sleeping peacefully with his siblings, He had them brutally ripped out of his care. to never be seen again, From now on Rocky would be more protective, And he knew he had one more chicken left, and that was Butterscotch.

[ The power of a barred rock rooster. ]
Though being young, it doesn't matter. After a few weeks, Rocky had completely transformed and this is where we got signs of his overprotectiveness since we were new to chickens, we were just planning ducks but my uncle insisted on chickens we completely walked by all indications of him being a male and thought he was a female, He would escort Butterscotch to the coop, And whenever our ducks would get a bit close to Butterscotch, he will show them what happens. he was the ONLY bird that understood that the dogs were there to protect and serve, he would not run from them when they slightly walk next to him, and he would catch a ride on one of the dogs back to get around the yard, He would scavenge for food at a early age, we had a few blueberry bushes and that started his addiction. he grew more and more. He accepted me as some sort of.. "Hen" I would play along so I would not hurt his feelings.

[ The hawk attacks start, and a new Rooster appears ]
We got some tips from our neighbors during December that a gang of hawks entered the neighborhood, Our neighbor gave my uncle a number of a friend who sold strong Roosters for cheap, he bought one and brang it home, at first.. it was okay.. The Rooster was incredibly nice to Butterscotch, we knew it was a bad idea to have a big Rooster near young hens, we still thought Rocky was a hen until I realized something.. When I went downstairs to feed the birds I saw Rocky sparring with that Rooster, he had his neck against the ground, his feathers puffed up and when I told him to get off and ran over there, he did, and the new Rooster got up and ran through the gate, completely zipping.. we later found out that Rooster ended up staying with our neighbor.. We did not mind.. And when we found out it was a Rooster, we were certainly happy, Though we did get mad because we wanted 3 hens..

[ Rocky fully grown and the death of his last hen. ]
Rocky had fully turned into a real Rooster, He was excellent at crowing, He kept butterscotch close and made sure she was okay.. However when he escorted butterscotch and climbed on the little beds we made, Butterscotch did not make it. and she was dead in the morning. Rocky immediately was saddened, Having lost all of his importance in his life, He crowed to get me to come down and tried getting Butterscotch up to no avail. In return, we got some new hens for him. It was not the same but it was good to not be alone.. and so he doesn't need to interact with Margarito all day.. who was quite the talker alright.

[ Rocky now. ]
Rocky has 2 new hens, a black australorp and a leghorn, we named Envy (australorp) and.. Dweebledop for the leghorn.. which was given its name by my cousin because "she looked funny".. he had never seen a leghorn before We are planning to get more hens for him, maybe a barred rock hen to remind him of his sister's, or a brahma for butterscotch.. And now with proper food and the will to fight a cooper's hawk and win (If you would like to hear about THAT ONE i would recommend checking out the previous posts i've made) I don't think Rocky would like to be anywhere else. I've attached some pictures of Rocky.. if you wish you can share some of your chicken stories in here. Thank you for reading!!!

Thank you for sharing your wonderful stories makes me want to go out and hug my rooster LOL his name's Richard and then of course his son Little Richard

Roo's are amazing chickens. Sadly we aren't zoned for roo's -- only 5 hens. In past years we got a couple cockerels by mistake but it was hard give them up to re-home them :(

When there are no roo's in a flock an alpha hen takes the lead. Our old Dominique hen is now alpha and leads the Silkies to charge at stray feral cats in the yard. Otherwise she hangs back to protect the rear flank:

I have 2 funny storys about 3 of my chickens. We had a little cochin silkie rooster (that wasn't silkie) named Coco. We also have a gray silkie rooster named Saoirse (searsha). Coco was generally the more dominant one, so he would try to mate with all of the hens, and kinda bully the hens about it too, but whenever he did that Saoirshe would come over and start pulling on Coco's feathers. Coco would try to run from this, but Saoirshe would chase him until he got a good peck on him. So, whenever the chickens were free-rangeing, sometimes we would just see the 2 roosters running back and forth around outside. The second story is about when Coco tried to get with our dominant hen, Roadrunner, a speckled sussex. He started doing the mating dance, when Roads full on jumped at him like a rooster, spurs out (she actually has spurs even though she's a hen) neck feathers ruffled. Also Coco was a super tiny rooster, so Roadrunner towered over him as well. Coco never tried mating with her ever again.
Here's pictures:
