To further confuse me, today I found an egg with this chicks feathers in the laying box. Also, the egg is very dark brown, so this is a new egg to my mix of colors. This is the chick that is mounting other laying hens.

The reason the older hens are fighting with the younger barred rock cockerel is because they do not deem him "worthy." In their eyes, he is too young to cover them and he is just trying to uproot the pecking order. Once he matures, they will probably let him breed, unless there is another male in the yard that already has dibs on them.
