roo or hen?

This is true for pure barred birds. When you cross a barred bird with a non-barred bird, you can no longer go by that rule.

I agree that's a rooster. Why he looks different is why one of my sons was 5' 10" and 180lbs at 13 years old, and my other is 5' 5" and 120lbs. Everyone develops differently.

Do you know which parent was the Dominique? Just wondering if it was a sex link cross. If you're getting a bird with a barred parent, always good to ask if you don't know the gender of the offspring. A barred hen under a non-barred rooster will have barred male chicks.
donrae,

I recently tried incubating eggs for my first time with a small little Brinsea mini advance. I put in 6 of my pure Ameraucana eggs and one mix egg from my barred PR hen from the same Ameraucana roo. Are you saying if the chick is barred it is a male? The little chick is only 9 days old, and was born with typical BR appearance but no dot on it's head at all. Any feathers seeming to come in are solid black. (roo is black/lav split). Does this mean my little one is a girl? I can try to get a picture if you need one.

THanks,

Agree with enola, that's a little sex linked pullet. If your roo is a blue gene guy, this pullet should lay green eggs.

That's why I love barred hens, you can put them under pretty much any rooster (non-barred, not white) and get sex linked babies~

if I remember correctly, the female was dominecker and the male was buff orpington. Both birds I posted pics of are from the same hatching.

What exactly does "sex-linked" mean?

Now for the pure Ameraucana chicks, the first sign will be to watch those combs correct? I will keep an eye out, and hope they stay pale and small! lol...

THanks for the help,
