Chickens are not the smartest of critters, so he might not have known to go inside at night. I've had them decide to roost in a dead bare tree where they were out in the open instead of a nice full pine with all kinds of protection. My roos, when I used to be able to free range them, were the worst ones for not going back into the coop at night. They were also most likely to jump into the dog pen. Stupid stupid birds!
