Roost & poop board design

Quote: For sure.

First exposure to lawn mower, I thought they were going to break their necks flying into run walls trying to get away.
Thankfully they didn't....now they come running and follow the mower along the run walls to catch the bugs it sends scrambling into the run.

(But....psssst..... screws are better anyway, not as loud and much easier to modify later)

Yeah, trade-off between build time and mod time, but my impact driver is none-to-quiet either! I do love my nailers, for throwing something up fast, tho. Also easier to wield with one hand, while holding material in place with the other.

I'm putting them outside in the coop when I get home at noon today. 70F today, with 42F tonight. Will stop by the pet store to see if I can find one of those cozy cat carpet igloo things, and might throw a heated (microwaveable gel) stadium seat cushion in there with them, if you guys think they'll be fine outside in this weather. They're only 5 weeks old, but they do have feathers.

Can depend on what temps they are used to...42F might be a shock if they are used to 70 in the house.
You don't want them piling.
New environment will freak them too...might have to 'help' them into the igloo and to stay there.
Lots of variables and options for moving chicks outside.

Good thoughts. At 63F now, and dropping. Forecast tonight changed to 45F. Will head out after the kids are in bed, and try guiding them to the igloo I set up for them. Warm fuzzy dog pad curled into 5 gal bucket on its side. A little tight, but they will fit cozy.

In the coop with them now. Took some convincing to get them to lay in bucket with wooly dog bed, instead of just crowding into a corner of the coop, but they seem to be gradually getting the idea. Trouble is, it's not that cold in here yet, but it certainly will be by morning.

What no pics? hehe.
That should block any drafts OK.
They do take some convincing/training.
How many chicks do you have?
Only concern might be that the rounded 'bottom' might cause them to pile and harm the one(s) that end up on the bottom of the pile.

Only 4 chicks. Filled round bottom with pine chips to level it, and catch poop. Could hear one pecking at end wall (traditionally the bottom of the bucket), so I may cut bottom out of bucket for tonight. What do you think? It would give them thru passage from both ends, but will not retain heat as well.
