since you have the bird and can observe other symptoms i recommend you reading this. it is the most detailed poultry information i have found (without buying a poultry text book)

you might want to double check the Newcastle disease descriptions...
it doesn't sound like a bacterial infection.

I know little about chicken diseases, but the symptoms of gasping, breathing through mouth and scratching at his nostrils makes me wonder if he has something wrong with his sinuses. Could they be blocked or perhaps even not developed properly? An upper respiratory problem? Just throwing ideas out there. Good Luck! He is beautiful.

I started feeding him medicated chick starter yesterday. He is not breathing through his mouth this morning. The color around his eyes is getting a little brighter but his comb is still pale. I haven't been able to get a Qtip down his throat to check for gapeworm. I guess I am afraid of hurting him. He does look a little better this morning though.

Let's hope its a steady recovery then. I had a cockerel four years ago with breathing problems. I knew he ate a lot of cherries at his first home so I guessed he got some up his nose the way some kids do. I nursed him back with making sure the nostrils were clean, stress booster in the water once a day and penicillin in case of pneumonia or infection. I was guessing but he finally got rid of what ever was irritating his wind passages. If he was being attacked I suspect he could have inhaled dirt, bugs, or food and gone up the wrong way and whatever. Keep him in a sick room to recover without outside stresses.
