Rooster Went Nuts...Brutally Attacked Hen (MORE PHOTOS ADDED)

Thanks for updating. I'm happy she's doing well/okay.

I'm sorry about your hen. The rooster must have been a nut. I had several roos this past year who were the breed I wanted but were rapists. They were rehomed. I finally have one who is mostly a gentleman, if he wants a hen, and she turns away, he walks away. There are wonderful roos out there, you just have to find one. I was without a roo for half a year before I found the right one. The girls seemed to miss having a roo. One hen actually started mounting others. There was more bickerinng. That roo you had needed to be gone.

Jeeze, must be something in the air. We just lost one hen to one of our roosters, caught him in the act before he could do much damage to the second though.

Fingers crossed for your girls speedy recovery!

In answer to your question about neosporin with pain killers, any medication with "cain" in it is toxic to chickens. ie. lidocain, benzocain, etc... Don't know why in particular on a cellular level, I just know that it will kill them.

Good luck with your poor little birdie.

Wow...poor thing, I want to cry for her. I didn't read all the posted but I hope she's doing better. As for the Roo......I hope he's simmering in a nice big roaster at 325 with some onions & carrots!!

Alita (aka Allie) is still doing well. She ate some hard boiled egg, fresh corn and scratch that she was given and she seems active and alert with no issues so far.

The rooster was put down by my Vet and buried. Had it been completely up to me, he would have just gone the Louis XVI route and then off to a roasting pot.

EDIT: Forgot to mention, I went back in with scissors and snipped away all the blood crusted feathers this afternoon to clear them away from the wound. The wound seems to be healing fairly well so far so we'll see. She started plucking the stumps of her feathers away too and went into her normal preening mode. Honestly, if not for the gaping wound on her head and down her neck, she's basically acting 100% normal.
