Rooster With an eye injury after raccoon attack

One of my hens has decided to roost in my giant cedar tree in the back so far up I can’t even get to her. It’s a mess

He’s missing his tail feathers and some wounds on his cone that will all heal with time but one of his eyes is swollen shut. When I found all of this early in the morning he looked like he was trying to open it a little but ever since he’s had it closed. He’s just acting kind of weird but I’m sure that’s because of everything that happened last night. Almost like he’s falling asleep a little when he standing every once in a while
He's in shock if he's sleepy.

Work on getting him hydrated. Electrolytes or sugar water would be good.
Once he's drinking well on his own and more alert, then offer a bit of food.

Check him over really well for any other injuries that may be hidden under all his beautiful feathers. Look for scratches, punctures, etc.

For the eye, saline rinse, then apply a little plain neosporin in and around the eye. His ear looks a bit bloody, so take a look at that too.

Check his beak, hard to tell if that's just some dirt or if it's broken. If broken, he's going to be hesitant to eat/drink for a few days due to tenderness but push fluids on him and offer wet soupy food.

When you have time, get more photos if you wish.
Hopefully he come around o.k.

Nails sticking out like that are handholds for Raccoons. Just sayin'
The Raccoon(s) will be back. For me they travel in a troop or whatever it's called. I usually end up with 3-4 coming together. If they make a nuisance of themselves, then consider trapping them.
I decided to go medieval when I fixed the coop today

Oh the board has completely fix the opening in the coop regardless of the nails he can’t get in. And then I did a four times over check out the entire thing
His beak has always had a chip on the front of it ever since I got them at 10 weeks old. I checked the rest of them out yesterday and the only injury I found was the one I sent of his head and I’ll try to get a better picture
He’s been eating and drinking just fine thankfully but I’ll be adding electrolytes to his water this morning

I know there’s a raccoon that looks around the property. But I’ve never been able to catch him because it smelled the night but the coops always been secure. So I’m also setting traps this weekend.

Glad he's eating/drinking. I'd just keep tending to that eye.
Try to flush at least once daily, sometimes with an injury like they the eye will get foam or even pus in it, flushing that away can help with healing along with applying ointment in the eye.

I do like Raccoons, IF they will stay in the woods/field and along the creek or outer perimeters LOL
There's a LOT of nightcrawlers around my coop and the surrounding area. I set up my cam and watch the Coons dig for them. If they are just digging up worms and not poking around for weak spots at/on the coop and fencing, then I leave them be, but some eventually do decide to become a nuisance, then I put out my traps.

That’s why they knew longer free range. Not the raccoon but the insanely high predator load out here. Several fox dens , coyotes, I’ve heard bobcat calls from the woods on my property several times, raccoons, possums. I guess that’s what happens when you move next to a 4400 acre conservation area. That’s why when I moved here I spent a very long time converting that shed into a chicken coop because I knew if I didn’t put up a good lockdown fortress I would’ve lost a lot by now. I’ve never had one actually get inside the coop itself when it’s closed up
But from now on I’m doing a monthly inspection of every single inch of it

Also about a year ago they built a 6000 acre solar farm not too far from me. And I think it drove a lot of even more wildlife our way. He did open his eye just a little bit this morning of course he closed it when I started messing with it but it doesn’t at least look like it’s getting infected so far. I’m just gonna make sure to keep up on the medicine for it. Because rooster definitely needs both his eyes!

Got home from work and his I just slightly open. Sometimes they get to free range for about an hour if I’m home before it gets dark and the goats are out. Because they’re smart and stick by the goats because not too many animals are going to mess with over 600 pounds of goat. Obviously don’t want to let them out if he can’t see very well. But I reluctantly let them out for about the next hour but though. Since I (and my shotgun) wound out there with them But None of them want to seem to go back into the coop and less I wait till dark and have been carrying them to the coop. Which it’s not a lot but I can tell they’re stressed about it. Even though it’s safe now I’m sure they will understand after a couple nights that till several nights in there with nothing happening. It’s safe now. But right now they’re super freaked out to go inside their coop🙁

They can be a bit unsettled for several days after an attack. Give them a little time and see how it goes.
It probably wouldn't hurt to provide a water station with electrolytes for a day or two to help with stress. (Do provide fresh plain water too).

Another thing you can try is cleaning out the coop a little, then adding some new bedding/straw in there so things look and smell slightly different.

I was thinking that too. With the daylight hours shorter when I get home it’s close to dark. But I have the day off today so I’m doing a full clean out because I need to do it anyway but it probably will at least help with a ‘reset’ for them. I’m sure they’ll fall back into place soon. I’m surprised my rooster is being so patient with me handling him this much. He’s never aggressive but he’s just not big on being handled. But he’s been very patient. Even this morning his eye is looking just a bit better. And he starting to seem to act a little bit more himself.
I did the electrolytes starting yesterday morning in a separate water container for them. And think I’ll keep that going through the weekend at least.
