Roosting bar idea?

I recommend not allowing the wood to go all the way to the chainlink unless you wall off where the roost meets the chainlink. Chickens will sometimes roost right against the chainlink and Ive had coons pull chickens through the wire or just pull their heads off through it. So if it does butt against it make sure you have something covering up that area like a piece of roof tin 🤟
Yeah, I have branches stuck through chain link for run roosts, but they're not intended for night time use. Otherwise yes you're risking raccoons especially being able to reach in and tear out pieces of chicken.

I use a lot of scrap lumber for the roosts in the run. Hubby also built me some awesome steps up to the “Ladies’ Loft.” They like to roost on the steps during the day.

I also drag in a log every once in a while too. They like to scratch and peck at the bark and the beetles.

Or they just roost on me…

What breed are your girls? They are so pretty! I never thought of a stand alone roost🤦🏻‍♀️ I was thinking of something to run through the holes on the kennel. I wondered about a broom stick but it being round it just rolls and they could fall off.
the round handles my girls just fell off of so I used the flat boards for the fence lol just recycling & repurposing not real sure that they are.... they were supposed to be rode island red's when we got the from the tractor supply store but someone told me they look more like rode island blues so i have no Idea

Broomsticks are very small diameter unless you have tiny chickens.

My favorite is stair rail. And I discovered that comes in different widths/diameters and shapes - I like the wider kind that is rounded rather than round. I can't justify the full price to buy it new but I found a short piece in the s 70% off bin and a long piece in the scrap bucket at an estate sale. I used for where they go in the daytime. They sleep on a bigger branch (technically, it is a sapling trunk that needed to be thinned out of the edge of the woods anyway).

I'm keeping watch for more stair rails to replace more of the make-do places.

Edit to add, the chickens favorite for daytime perching as best I can tell, is 4x4 posts with rounded edges. But they take up a lot of space and are heavy.
