Roosting Jersey Giant

I breed JGs. They are heavy so you don't want the roosts too high because when if they land on something hard like a stone, splinter, corn grain, or frozen turd they may injure their foot, especially when they get older. This leads to bruising & bumblefoot. They need room to flap to get up and down off the roost too, so definitely move them more than 12 inches from the wall. Try 16 inches. Put the wider side of the 2x4 up so they can be comfortable. If you keep a male, he may be so long that it's difficult to preen his vent area, so he may be your alert if/when you get feather lice in your flock. It is easy to keep males free of ectoparasites with permethrin poultry spray (meter it per bird carefully). They are usually a gentle breed, especially from SQ parents. Enjoy!
