Rosecomb Thread

im just seeing a lot of mutts sold as high quality new show colors for a lot, that uneducated are buying up from breeders trying to experiment, so its starting to get to me, as these people getting the birds are then either let think what they have represents the breed in any and all characteristics, as well as laughed at by some on here even. fortunately i missed being one of them as was given a show cockerel, and chose not to try to breed him to a hen slightly sub par, though hope to have them again someday to soon, and hope there is at least decent quality around instead of the just close enough to..

If everyone thought that way, you wouldn't have the time honored quality and perfection you so enjoy now. And everything can be improved upon.

I understand, if it makes you feel better I have birds here I worked on for 5+ years and never sold one for any reason not till they meet the standard for the breed and a good description of the color.
I do not and will not provide a bird that will not breed true to color and type unless it is to someone who is a willing participant and very experienced with the breed that shows, and then they are freely given to aid in the project as it takes more than 1 person to be sucesfull.
I have been though this before and often take on things just to make it right, then move on. I enjy the challenge but truely like the rosecomb as a breed for thier appearance and stature I would like to see more folks involved with them but Black is not very appealing to many peaople and that is all that is seen in shows near us. Shawnee ok, OSPF show had les than 15 Rosecombs entered out of over 2500 birds and all were black with the exception of 1 Blue cockrell.
we eat a lot o fchicken around here for a reason not everything makes the cut and If I wont show it or breed from it it is not going anywhere,

i didnt mean anything bad by it, as selling even is fine, but its just so many are "bred" by so many and sold as best there is around here especially and in other places seen on here. i love the other colors, dont get me wrong, but to newbies, seeing a perfect pair, then trying to find some like them around after, and only finding horrible mutt crosses passed of as, if even have true bantam rosecomb in them, is disheartening. especially when i talk up the breed when others looking for those qualities, or have seen and handled my cock i had, then go try to find others and then say how they are bad birds. heck the best bird i could find around here was a OEGB hen, closest to my cock, course she looked like she could have had rosecomb in her with her almost rosecomb and lobes etc, she was a horrible layer unlike other OEGB hens that looked totally different.

it just gets to be what was a standard developed, keeps changing, when the name of new could just be added to or changed slightly. for instance the first example is fantail pigeons everyone loved as young children, but nowadays the standard has them so weak and sickly, that they look hideously diseased runts that can hardly walk or stand, and seem to have trouble even eating or holding heads up. cant there just be added dates to new standard and show all as some want to "progress" on classic breeds? ive seen this a lot in chickens also and now some look up old stuff on the heritage breeds and wonder why theyre all so sickly and just basically all otherwise useless show cage birds.
anyone old enough to remember before you had to constantly feed special chemical feeds and antibiotic and give all sorts of shots to birds that actually were able to be let out loose, and wouldnt die from exposure to a gentle breeze? when having an animal was more than just keeping it in tiny show cages to do nothing more than breed, with assistance?

first Rosecombs arrived this morning, I was very impressed with the size, type comb quality, overall very satisfied with what I recieved. I will post a few pics in a few days after they settle in and get bathed. don't want to stress them anymore today.

Can't wait to see them, also real anxious to get started on making spangled rosecombs.

I am so pleased you like the birds, means a lot too me. I am working very hard on what I have here, and hope to do some showing this year. Have eggs in the incubator now, plan on showing some young this fall.
