Runner with a prolapsed penis

Hahaha! It does seem to follow him wherever he goes! I will spare you the gruesome picture...unless someone needs it for reference for some reason. But, I will share the picture that my 5 yo made (with a little help from her 8yo sister).

Sorry that it is sideways!

I'll share my experience with you. I had one drake prolapse - pretty much all his dangley. We worked to try to save it, then it did get injured and sore. We took sterile scissors (nice and sharp) and I made myself do the cut. He wasn't bothered by the snip at all, it barely bled and healed without much care. A duck's dangley doesn't seem to have much in the way of nerves or blood supply, fortunately. I still have my boy, a pet for years and years, and he's never been fertile after that (some drakes retain enough to get the job done, but not Freckles).

If he's really hanging all out and not going in at all (we were able to get Freckles back in for a day or two at a time), I'd recommend being tough with yourself and see if taking about half of it is enough to allow him to retract it. I suspect a genetic component - my drakes have plenty of ducks and breed vigorously with no problem.

I don't think letting it dry out is good for your drake and the longer it hangs out and drags around, the more likely it is to get damaged and infected. That's my thought. I would give him some time to see if its going to go back in, but realistically, I wouldn't let it go on and on like we did for Freckles.

I've wondered about the genetic component too... I've had ducks for over 40 years, off and on, probably close to three hundred head count and we've never had a prolapse ... some of the ducks were our breeding, more were hatchery orders or purchased from local breeders. I'm thinking it's a cull-able issue if you're breeding, certainly I hear a lot more about it than I used to. of course, with pets, that's another thing - not raising ducklings anyway so it doesn't matter.

Wow - I've never heard of this issue and I'm surprised it's so common!

A 2:1 or 1:1 ratio seems extreme to me - my Khaki Campbell drake was busy with his harem of seven ducks all last year, and I was even thinking of adding more ducks. But then, as with everything else in the poultry world, "Your results may vary".

LOL, reading that thread would be a marathon. You should just skip to the end and post

Whatever you do (snip now or snip later) just watch out for infection. I'd dress it a couple of times a day with something antibacterial.

I don't think you'd need to stitch it up.

Your daughter's picture is so cute - and moving. Poor Blackie. At least what he has isn't fatal. He'll get better, even if he's a bit lighter in some departments.

..at least he'll have his memories .......OMG! unless they're in the wrong head !

He had about 2" out originally, and ended up losing 3/4 to an inch. After we put him back he is back to having his way with the girls, and is successful. I can't say that he is still fertile, as we have not hatched any. But he is still happy anyway!

Sorry for the late response.
