Runs & Sand...A WARNING!!!

Way to go!!!! I TRY to make sure hubby is around when I need to be shoveling sand but he isn't always available when I NEED something done ASAP. When you get back to being able to wipe your own butt again (LOL) give yourself a big pat on the back. You will LOVE LOVE LOVE the sand.

I called a local landscaper and he charged me $50 for the truckload of sand, which his guys picked up, brought over AND shoveled into my coop. No sore muscles here!

My husband has been shoveling sand around all our pens for weeks. He lost a lot of weight doing that. Now he wants more sand (20 more tons) for Christmas!

That was nice of him to check out what kind of truck you had, most places will just fill it, and if your truck can't handle it--too bad! I buy from a sand and gravel pit, and really have to watch carefully when they load with a 5 yard bucket. Two seconds and you are overloaded! But it is the way to go when you need sand in bulk. Just be sure you know how much you can safely carry.

Oh man I'm so jealous . . . we don't HAVE a truck so I had to haul sand, in 50 pound bags, in my poor little station wagon over three trips from Home Depot. Wish I had a truck - there's a gravel and rock place just down the street from our house - but their delivery was going to cost three times as much as the bagged sand. Sigh. Hope your muscles are feeling better.

Maybe I could get some sand to shovel so I can loose weight by Christmas!

Wow--I can see the new "sand spas" being built--a new fad for losing weight! The chiropractor will be next door....

Exactly, I have a Ford Ranger....I load my own sand/gravel thank-you-very-much.

I'd rather shovel it twice than be stuck overloaded.

We get pea gravel that way for free from the river dredging activities, and it has small stuff in it that I sift out for use as grit, but over all it's just not sand. We did fill up a bunch of FIL's drivway with it though! Sore muscles sure beats $$$$/yard when you're unemployed and have LOTS of time on your hands!

Fargosmom, give a landscaper a call and just ask what they would charge for a truckload of sand. As I said in my earlier post, it cost me $50 for a ton. That's a lot cheaper than buying it by the sack load from Lowes or Home Depot. If they can get to where you need it, they'll put it there for you and if they can't, at least you'll have a big pile of sand a little cheaper!

You did right getting the coarse sand. Fine sand not as good. A plus for the coarse sand is that it has just the right sizes of particles for grit, and so you will not have to buy grit at $5 for 5 LBbs ever again. Only difference it is it limestone instead of granite. Chooks cannot tell the difference and get a calcium boost too.
