Russian Orloffs

I am actually a member of Azure standard, and I have tried some of their poultry feeds. But I had the same issue, there was just too much "dust". Seemed like a lot of waste unless I mixed it with yogurt or some other binder, and for the price… But I was able to find a 27% gamebird feed today ($25 for 50# - ouch), to mix with my current bag of feed. Turns out I just needed to go to our big-box feedstore (Big R) instead of the smaller locally owned ones I usually buy through. Nothing against Big R I actually go there a lot for things like hardware, welded wire, etc. Their prices beat our local Lowes/Home Depot. I just haven't spent a lot of time in their feed section recently. I am going to try the Azure feeds again though, I've read some pretty good reviews about the Scratch and Peck. But yes, the cost of feed is one reason why I am staying small for now, as much as I would like to branch out into other heritage breeds, including turkeys.

Wow, I just looked at that Scratch and Peck and it is way expensive. Those are only 40 lb bags. Equivalent of $36.06 for 50 lb for the starter, and they aren't even certified organic yet (says they are applying for it but aren't yet). And again, it is a mash, not pellets. Plus that price is an on-sale price of 10% off.

Think I'll stick with Modesto. But if you do try it, I'd be curious what you think about it. PM me if you do. We don't have Big R down here.

Alfalfa and corn don't bother me but GMO and soy do. I know the birds will go eat beans out of the garden on their own volition so that have to ask myself if soy is so bad. I am not sure. I hear you on cost. If the birds go the RO will be the last off the cart. I know they are longest shot and all that, but I love 'em. The turkeys don't pay out well so far. I have Midgets here. Trying it but it might not be for me after all. My son loves it. He isn't the one paying feed bills or butchering though either.

The problem with the GMO corn and soy crops is the Round-up ready genes used so they spray the crap out of those crops with Round-up which is a nasty chemical (don't let anybody tell you otherwise). So if you are eating the meat and/or eggs from your birds fed that stuff, you are getting it, too. There are other ramifications of GMOs, too, if you do some reading. I am currently using a soy-based feed but it is certified organic, so no chemicals used on the crops.

Ashandvine, how do you like the Midget Whites? I have heard their meat is the best tasting of any of the heritage breeds. Are you on the Rare Heritage Turkey group on Yahoo? Haven't ever seen you post, so maybe not, but a good group and lots of knowledgeable people.

Desert, I am not a monsanto fan.
Now as far as the MW I haven't eaten one yet but maybe later this year. I heard the same about their taste. I was in the Heritage thread but got invited into Turkey 2013 thread and find it to be more active and more friendly. I think I have seen YOU in the Heritage turkey thread so its funny you didn't see me. Didn't I post at you even?

I can't keep up with all the threads I'm subscribed to! I read all the posts on the Yahoo Groups Rare Heritage Turkey but haven't been on BYC turkey threads lately. I posted there but it has been a long time. I will have to check out Turkey 2013.

I am subscribed to a bunch of threads (mostly just a confirmed lurker). But I have to admit this is the first one I read when there's a new post. :)

I am sad to say I have two Orloff boys that will most likely end up in a soup pot. They have finally matured and are really being aggressive with all the girls. They are so big they are injuring the hens. No one around here has heard of an orloff or wants the guys so...... I know I'll end up teary over these two since they have been very friendly.
