Russian Orloffs

Hello fellow Orloff-ists :)

I'm new to the breed and am just hatching my first lot out: bantam and LF spangleds. I have such a variety in down colour in the LFs that I thought I'd better seek out more information from my betters lol.

The bantams are all just plain yellow, whereas the LFs come in either yellow, yellow with a hazy stripe or a yellow version of chipmunk. What's going on there? Being an established breed and colour, I was expecting them to be all identical. I did some skim-reading of this and see that, last year, a few of you were going to keep tabs on down colour and adults colour. I didn't see the results of it, though.

I also saw a few of you hatch some with feathered legs. A lot of the bantams have the same. All rather confusing to a newcomer to the breed!

Hi - I'm new to this thread, enjoyed the pics. :) I just hatched my first LF spangled russian orloff. I got the eggs in a trade. I love this russian orloff chick!! What a personality from day 1. I would love to hatch some more of these birds. If anyone is interested in selling or trading eggs please send me a pm. Thanks!

In my experience, what you are seeing is typical. Our bantams hatch yellow (some have a darker buff tint, or maybe a light strip on their head), while the largefowl have the darker chipmunk pattern.

So far I haven't noticed any major difference in coloration based of the chicks phenotype. Similar looking chicks have grown up to have more white, or a lighter mahogany then their look alike sibling. What I have noticed is the males (in the bantams) are often lighter. But, this isn't always true and could purely be strain related.

What do you mean by feathered legs? Occasionally chicks (of all breeds) will hatch with some fluff stuck to the top of their legs. I heard this occurs during incubation, and isn't genetic. And that if you yank the fluff out, it shouldn't grow back. But, I'm not sure how true that is.

But ultimately, this breed shouldn't hatch with feathers on their legs or toes. If they do, cull them.
