Russian Orloffs

Wow snow you say that sounds cold and here the worst weather
we have had in the last 15 years when it snowed in the surrounding
mountains and it dipped into the lows of +4 degrees F but the normal
winter lows are around + 15 F and that is the morning readings just
after the sun comes up and all the birds want out of their cages .....

Yes I like to use the hen's to do the hatching as they are much
better at it then I am that is when they go broody my real problem
is the geese the only one who sits on egg's till hatch is a Gander
but he has no idea what to do after they hatch, but after the new
gosling is taken away he goes back to sitting on the egg's .....

Beautiful feathering too! I have RIR eggs in the bator due to hatch on the 13th and plan to collect RO eggs to put in afterwards. I like to wait until the 2nd or 3rd week after pullets start laying before incubating any and it has worked out pretty well. With these it will put chicks hatching by early February so (fingers crossed!) chickens can start contributing to the feed bill! Well, maybe because depending on the weather folks may want to wait until the chicks no longer need extra heat. If that happens dh may not like my adding more to feed;-)

Got a bit of a scare this evening. Went down about an hour til dark to make sure everyone got some water and scratch before roosting. When latching the run door the wind picked up and I saw a cockerel sit down in the hay out in the run. I thought he was giving up and freezing instead of going in the house!! The wind was still blowing and as I watched another cockerel sat down beside the first, then a pullet behind them. Now I was holding my breath....thinking the worst....then the wind let up and everyone stood back up! Silly me, chickens know when to keep their legs and feet protected They still got in their house like usual when the scratch was gone.

I'm so bumbed.. my bf went to pick me up 3 russian orloffs and brought back one orloff and I believe one light salmon faverolle and one dark salmon faverolle. So I need to find more orloff hens. My bf didn't say anything as he didn't know the difference. He only does chickens for me

TherryChicken that's a bummer. Hopefully you will be able to find some hens. Poor guy should have a better idea now of what an Orloff looks like. Good luck

Too bad he couldn't go change the two faverolle for Orloffs.
